'Voice Attack'?

I heard on youtube of software called 'Voice Attack' or similar, which basically allows you to speak to your ship like you're Captain Kirk, giving commands like raise/lower landing gear, engage hyperspace and so on. Where do you get this software and what is the hardware required to get going with it, because it really sounds like it'll add to the immersion. :)

I've been looking into it myself. I don't think you need any special hardware. Its all software based and binds in-game keys to voice commands. You would need a microphone and that's it.

I actually downloaded voiceattack and paid for the commanders and all that but after about two days of the ship talking back to me i shut it off and havent used it since it gets really tediouse imo, and i started to anoy me lol. be warned

It's just a Sonic Attack! ;)

All you need is Voice Attack, you don't need to purchase anything else as long as you have a headset or some type of mic. Even my webcam mic picks it up pretty well. Oh, and to the OP, usually if you want to find out about something, or where to get something, there is this thing called google. In the search bar, you type in what you want, and then you press enter or click on the search button. Usually, the thing you are looking for is in the top 3 of the results. How they do this is beyond me, I suspect there is witchcraft and voodoo involved, however, I do not have any solid proof of that.

I bought it. It works. It isn't too difficult to set up.

Since I bought my x55 stick I haven't used it at all.

Voiceattack with the HCS elite pack (the astra thing) is kinda nifty, but it feels like a novelty rather than a tool. I find I can respond FAR more quickly and efficiently with a good HOTAS stick configuration. Heck, i'm far far faster with mouse and keyboard.

I may eventually use it again. Mostly as a secondary to the stick config.. such as if I want to do multiple things while in a very involved dogfight. I can see it could be useful if you have an Oculus. Not seeing the keyboard can be a disadvantage in certain cases, it can make up for it. I am considering an Oculus when it is officially released in 2015, so will reconsider regular use of voiceattack.

Be aware though, it isn't perfect. 'request docking' with voice attack can be a finicky thing. It can and will cancel your accepted missions. Voiceattack is not intelligent. It just sends a series of commands/keyboard presses to the game queued by a voice command.

example:

Left screen is set to Navigation: issue docking command. Game moves to left pane, tabs to contacts tab, submits docking request. It works fine.
Left screen is set to Contacts: issue docking command. Game moves to left pane, tabs to missions tab, cancels the mission. It doesn't work fine.

So.. if you want request docking to work, make sure that your left pane is always set to navigation. Move it back to navigation when you exit and continue about your business.

even tho it is a very funny comment its not very helpfull or respectfull to the OP maybe if you took a sec and found a link and posted instead of writing that comment and the rest of the world followed thes steps it be a happy war free place ... just sayin

There is a small movement to get "most commonly used functions", such as docking and subtarget selection bindable to a key so that it will work with Voice Attack. As you said, VA is a godsend for us using a Rift.

I personally wish for the destruction of all human life. The world would be a much better place. Does it look like my avatar wants a happy war free place? :p

More seriously:

"Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man how to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime".

I cannot imagine ED without VA (or any other game with a large range of controls) - it is fantastically good value for money, worth every penny IMO.

(Don't forget to train your Windows speech to your voice/accent before you try and use VA though).

Voice attack works very well and is very easy to setup. I turned of the replies such as landing gear retracted due to the in-game replied doing the same thing.

It is very nice to be able to do things on your keyboard by speaking a command while concentrating on other things!

It is so easy to type in Voice Attack in google and find the thing the OP was asking for. I am glad of the OP because I find Voice attack an excellent program and the more it is 'advertised' on these forums the more likely it will be used and continue being updated and improved.

Yeah ha ha, very good. Point taken. ;) So how do you train Windows to recognise your voice/accent? Presumably VA comes with full instructions?

You can google that too my friend. :D Its in the control panel and its called "speech recognition". It will tell you what to do when you start it. You have to talk for a long time. The longer you keep doing the "tutorial" the better the computer will recognize your voice. After 1,5 hours my PC still couldnt understand my "next" so i gave up. And i speak with a clear voice lol.

Maybe I'd get best results if I use my Stephen Hawking impression...

I've found it invaluable and wonderful for Elite. Just get it (demo), and check it works, then just buy it if it does.

It's excellent, although one caveat. I had to stop using 'Cargo' because when it kept jettisoning cargo as well as closing the cargo hatch, despite the fact they are configged on completely different keys. you can imagine my reaction. edit, ofc I never had any kind of jettison cargo voice command.
