Voice comms and lack thereof

I don't use my mic and I understand that takes me out of the coordinated PvP game for a lot of wings. I just wonder how much of an outlier a cmdr like me is that doesn't talk into the mic. My reasons can't be that unusual:

1. My game pc is in the living room
2. My wife lets me play 3-4 hours per day. We've been married 30 years; somehow our system works
3. She wants to see my face in the evening and interact with me
4. She wants to watch TV in the same room with me besides other activities

For all of the above reasons, in order to speak into my mic, this game rig would have to be in another room and my game time would be limited to about 1 hr per day.

So how do you voice comm PvP cmdrs coordinate wing activities and family at the same time?

Use a single ear headset and microphone. That way you can hear her when she speaks to you.

Oh! who am I kidding! We never hear them when the speak!

Indeed. I'm good at pretending to listen. But how disruptive is your speaking into the mic to someone watching TV from 10 feet away?

I don't have a mic hooked up and have no desire to do so. It used to be I'd hop on Ventrillo only when absolutely necessary in games years ago, like when leading a raid or doing arena, then it seemed much of gaming turned into sitting around on voice all day listening to all sorts of random nonsense. Anymore, if a game or a social group withing a game requires voice, I just don't take part in it.

I've never used this new Discord thing that's all the rage now, and don't plan to.

"I love you honey!" == charge frame shift drive.
"You want a cup of coffee dear?" == retract landing gear.
etc etc

Outstanding idea - coded verbal communications! Use VoiceAttack verbal commands to generate text messages:

"I'll wash the dishes" - Wing, target my target.
"Don't worry honey" - Wing, I'll recharge your shields.
"Which show are you watching?" - Wing, where are we heading?

I'm on discord and its a lot of instant messaging. Voice channels are there, I just never go into those.

What I am wondering is how can your wife watch TV with you playing ED 10 ft away? I don't use a mic either (XBONE user) mostly because there is almost no one to talk to. Plus my volume is pretty loud as I am pretty deaf after 15 years as a part time musician.

(No honey, I really was not ignoring you. I did not hear you, really I didn't!)

Don't use "Yes dear" for boosting though, if you want to prevent pancakes that is...

I turn the volume down for normal gameplay. If i need to listen to comms I plug in my ear bud.
