voice control should have been in the game

just wondering why voice attack / astra voice pack type interactions are not already built into the game. for me this made the game 1000% more immersive, bieng able to control my ship by voice is one of the best thing about this game. and i can chat to it to. i cant afford a vr headset but i do have a 10 pound mic. it seems like a simple little program that works 100% of the time. could have been a real selling point. and it definitely keeps be playing beyond the boredom threshold as being in my ship is just a nice place to be.

p.s can it be changed now to allow us to alter the in game sounds (ship computer voice) to our own (astra) voices

"astra play radio sidewinder" "aye aye commander"

You can turn off the ship lady and use ivona reader to have customized responses to voice commands. Closest you can get.

And ya, being an in game feature would be nice, but voice attack is a great program and the time and money spent incorporating it or creating their own version is better spent in other areas, IMO.

Voice Attack wasn't robust enough for me.... Mainly because it's prone to crashing when you are using complex voice macros and variables (for creating things like the "AI" being aware of the state of everything on your ship) so I combined Voice Attack with AutoHotkey and have the two sending each other information for complex macros through hotkeys on F13-F24, which aren't even used on my keyboard or Elite. "Full retreat!" "Retreating" *gear, scoop, lights, hardpoints, silent running all toggle to "retracted" conditionally.* Yup. Like a baws.

It's functionality that the game doesn't technically need in any way, so I can see why it wouldn't be a priority to develop it, and our ships do already talk to us to a degree. I'd like to see the ship HUD/UI of different ships, or at least different manufacturors have some variations. The voice could then also be different for those ship.

To me hands on contol of a combat capable ship makes more sense, in general.

Because it would have meant a great deal of additional development in an area FD do not specialise in.

VA and others do a perfectly good job but they use the built in OS voice recognition. If ED were to have it built in, FD would have to make sure it worked on all platforms. As it stands, it isn't their problem.

VA works fine (for me). Having a built in app would not have made any difference to the equipment, reliability or how much control you would have over your ship you would have as far as I can see.

What would be more immersive about using a built in app compared to a 3rd party app?

Well I didn't say it would add any more emersion for me (I already have it) just that it would be a good selling point to the game as it feels so much better with voice interaction.

They have enough problems and bugs trying to code it as it is, glad voice attack was made by better devs instead of FD trying it

Sorry - you are quite right.

It also makes the ship easier to control. Can't imagine ED without VA (actually that isn't true - I know what it is like after my son washed peanut butter off my last headset in the sink and was without a mic for a week while I waited for a replacement. :/).

I think my earlier reasons for FD not doing it still stand though.

Yeah I use VA in ED along with my 360 control and it works brilliant - for the price of the program (about £5) its been worth every penny. Oh and the support is good too btw if you should ever need it.

Someone needs to take the Voice Attack people to one side and explain a few facts of life to them. They have a product which they strongly encourage you to try for free for 21 days. They will then sell you a licence for that product for just eight US dollars. They provide unlimited help and support. They seem to be a company with high ethical standards and made up of people who really enjoy what they do and want their customers to enjoy using their product. I mean for goodness sake what sort of a way of running a business is that? They could at least quadruple their price and make some outrageous claims that don't stand up to the slightest scrutiny.

As far as ED is concerned I think VA is a superb add-on which along with head-tracking lifts the game to another level. Mind you, what with those two and a radio player (I do like Orbital FM when I am in a fight) and something like INARA for a commander's log function plus third party trade tools if you use them (personally I don't anymore - more fun and satisfaction without them), I am thinking about getting an extra screen just to manage the external apps. Goodness knows how XBox players will get on - for sure without the external apps they are going to be at a disadvantage and miss out on a lot.

I was sceptical about voice attack until I tried it. It is invaluable now, particularly for moving power to shields and back to weapons while steering your ship and shooting things all at once. Plus it is great imersion, but they need to add the voice for Zen the ship computer from Blakes 7 :)

An add-on to an add-on - I can't wait for Leo which is voiced by the actor who played Holly in Red Dwarf.

I love the way ED is spawning new products which give new ways to play the game and/or new experiences in the game. There is a sort of rampant capitalism going on as people spot little niches and produce gizmos to fill said niches. And all of them using the flexibility of the PC and the Internet with not a big player around (aside from the providers of the operating systems). Furthermore not even the game developers have a clue how the add-ons will affect their game. HeadTracking is the most obvious example of this.

There was a thread the other day where a player was complaining that the view out of a Python's windscreen was too restrictive and, unlike the Asp etc., it didn't allow him to look up or even allow him to look down at where he was trying to land. FD and the people who designed ships probably never even thought about players wanting to look anywhere other than the default straight ahead view. Now players have that ability and want to use it for the increased situational awareness that it brings, especially in a fight, and that affects game play but is wholly outside the designers' control.

I'm considering making my own custom voice pack, but how do I do that? I don't even own Voice Attack or actually know anything about it.

Can anyone point a noob in the right direction? :S

Am using the Leo pack from there - got Holly from Red Dwarf in my ship - I'm chuffed.
Got him playing music playlists on foobar, responding to me saying "Get the **** out of here" by dropping chaff, power to engines and boosting and also telling me I'm a crap pilot.

They need to get the voice actor that did Orac and Zen on Blakes7 to do some stuff and combine it with the Paul Darrow one on there (doubt he's still alive tho).

(Damn, i'm sad and pathetic)

heh. Just imagined <insert your favourite Youtuber here> playing ED for the first time.

"Ok Guys, we're playing Elite Dangerous! We just have managed to undock and are about to leave this station. Once you figured out the basic controls, it's not that hard to..."
<<Hardpoints deployed>>
"Wait, what was that? How to i... what was it again?"
*clicks through right panel*
"... Great, nothing about that here. It just tells me that they have an economic boost."
<<Boost activated>>
*barely manages to not crash into the station walls*
"Oh, shoot!"

I think you can extrapolate from here :D

Peter Tuddenham is dead unfortunately :(

Actually I have found the process of building my own VA profile to simulate the VI on the ship a fun and ongoing process.
That is was a 3rd Party tool in the background have given rise to the freedom we see, with with our own creations or the wonderful Elite Dangerous Voice Packs
