VOICE control - So looking forward trying this out.

Me too...however, I have noticed VA seems to lose integrity over time when using Skype at the same time...you have to keep relaunching VA every 10mins - hope there is a simple solution for this?

Make sure you're using a headset, and that you've run through the training a couple of times - that's important, because it's just using the underlying windows speech engine and it needs a bit of a leg up :)

I also found that some words it wasn't good at recognising could be explicitly trained. Do this by:
1. open up notepad or similar
2. go to the accessibility/speech set up stuff for windows, and put it into dictation mode (you'll get a little control panel at the top of the screen). Start dictating normal words to make it sure it works, your text should show up in notepad.
3. say the words it gets wrong, for me it was "guns", "hardpoints" and a few others. Say the word, and it'll recognise it as something else. Then say "correct word", and it'll let you correct it in notepad, but also it retrains the engine to be more exact. I found I had to correct it four or five times before it would reliably recognise a word, but after that - VoiceAttack was bulletproof :)

Cool - thanks Kiwishane!

What I mean't though was that Voice Attack is perfect for me (recognises all commands) then my friends get online and want to hookup on Skype - once we're talking on skype Voice Attack starts failing to recognise my commands - i have to literally speak as clearly as possible and repeat the command many times before it twigs. Switch of skype and its happy again. I think it doesnt like sharing the mic with Skype - just wondering if there was a clever way of avoiding this issue whilst using Skype?

My comment was really for OP rather than you, but np :) Yes, you're getting a conflict between Skype and VA, can happen with other voicechat software as well depending how it uses the mic (voicechat over Steam has no issues, for instance but Teamspeak has the same issue you're experiencing, at least for me). I'm guessing after being on a call for a while, and there's a bit of silence, Skype is silencing the mic or something.

You might have some luck with using push-to-talk on VA, I think it has the option in there somewhere. Your voice command may or may not still go through the Skype channel in that situation, but it should make VA work more reliably. Just a guess, YMMV.

PS, Skype can be a bit heavy on bandwidth. You might want to try things like chat via Steam (just launch ED through Steam, you'll get the overlay), or Teamspeak/Ventrilo.

Many good threads on here about VA, check em out.

Some commanders have scripts you can download for complex commands as well.

I did this myself...but the stoopid windows pack (American and UK) simply can't handle my Northern English accent. When saying Engage it would constantly come up with all sorts of nonsense. I spent 2-3 hours doing multiple cycles of the training app. Then opened Word and said Engage...it came up with cabbage or in rage etc etc.

So I said correct word...and that didnt help...so I said spell...where you can spell it out letter by letter. No matter how I said it (tried impersonating americans and dirty southerners)...when ever I said G it type J !!!!! and there doesnt seem to be an 'overtype' option.

In the end...and after swearing and having an argument with speech recognition (which had my wife in fits of laughter as she was on her computer doing 'real stuff') I noticed that 'balls' was being constantly recognised.

Balls is now my word to hyperspace (many other words jump, battle stations, shields...all fine..)...not overly immersive...but 3 hours...enough

I had a similar issue yesterday. However, only words I had problem with was system and map. And that was after half an our with speach training in windows only, not the notepad thing.
So Swedish is perhaps more close to American than Northern English accent :)

Nearly in tears..... "Balls"..... to jump to hyperspace

:D For a while I had "you killed my father prepare to die!" putting the hardpoints out :) Suggestion though: have you tried using the word cabbage in VA as the recognition word? Then you can say "engage", it hears "cabbage", Astra goes "engaging hyperdrive" and everybody is happy :) (except maybe your wife, who loses her source of amusement).

you can assign multiple words to the same command, i think by sepperating with a ;

When I Say: Engage; Cabbage; Engaged; Exchange
Do Kepress: H (whatever)

KiwiShane - Great tips there thanks mate.

Armante - I did try the 'search' any threads first but came up with ntohing. I try and find those scripts you mention to play around with. Thanks.

JEHEIL- Made me laugh above with the BALLS story.. ><
I could imagine Captain Piccard saying BALLS.

I just want to say the community here in the forum is top notch, great bunch of people we have here.

For any words causing recognition problems, create your own word, and\or add this word to the Windows "Voice Dictionary", where you can train the Dictionary to use your pronunciation for that particular word as well. In fact, I would suggest updating\training the dictionary for all the words used in VA. The experience is a whole lot more immersive when you don't have to repeat yourself.

Not just when using skype. It seems the commands get diluted until almost any sound triggers some of them. I find you are better using muli-work commands because they tend not to get mixed up with other sounds. Single syllable words are not a good idea in VA. You can sneeze and enter boost inside a station doing stuff like that.

VoiceAttack is brilliant and really adds to the immersion. Check it out.

i think its ridiculous and its a huge hadicap in combat. i have all keys except galaxy map, which is not necessary, binded to my throttle and stick and using them, esp in combat, has become second mature. While u r telling the computer to balance power mines already balanced.

Thanks to a couple of folks for the tips...I have added multiples and that is helping...how do I play with the Windows "Voice Dictionary" can I do it directly or do I just do it via the training repetition ?

I love VA and feel it was definitely worth the (very little) money.

I could partially agree. I think it depends on your setup. I only have a lowly T HOTAS X and so don't have an abundance of buttons. Those functions that require immediate responses, I certainly have mapped (like boost or shield regeneration). But in combat, I find it is better not to take my hands off stick/throttle. So it is a benefit to have some preset power configurations I can call out while maneuvering ("full power to shields", "attack configuration"). Balance power only takes one button, but running a series of commands to bring weapons to 3.5 pips while keeping the others where you want them is better (for me) with voice.

I've also noticed in this and other youtube videos how much users like hearing the thing talk back to you for every little command. Personally, this drives me nuts. It is maybe neat when you first start playing with it, but I shut that down very quickly on my own setup. I have more than 30 commands currently set up in VA and only 2 talk back to me: "deploying" when I ask to deploy landing gear (so I don't have to listen for the faint sound effect as confirmation that it actually started) and the time when I ask what time it is. And if I could make it less verbose, I would. Don't mind that others like all the talking, but the power of VA is in delivering the commands without moving my hands in my opinion.
