voice synthesis in game

Is there a reason voice synthesis for different races couldn't be included. It would just be nice to hear the guys scanning you actually saying things in an audible way rather than just text which seems quite old school. I know it could get annoying but maybe you could update the vocabulary or sentence structure so that it varies or maybe give some options to tailor how you hear the voices. I think it would give an extra level of immersion.

I have Amy voice installed, i hope for system messages to be readable by it, probably not enemy ship messages but if she was reading messages i think it should go like this.

You have new message commander: Stuupid Pirate says: I see all!

Yeah! There are some really great voice synths out there now too although licensing a lot of them for different voices could be exorbitant.

Would be cool to have a procedurally generated radio station where they intro the songs / read out the local news.

Why so complicated?
All it takes is just ask people here and say:

"PLEASE can you help us make the game better.

You just have to sign or acknowledge this statement about us using your voice for commercial purposes.
And you will not sue us for doing so. blah blah blah."

You bet people would help.

Ask folks to record several sentences in way they see fit
No need to professional mic, poor quality could help with mood.
And wizards from sound department in FD can run the sound with some filters and additional sounds.

Example :

Make a taunt or statement (several times) when you are about to attack someone (doesn't matter how) :

one person records : DieeeE !!!!
second person records : Yourrr mine !
third person records : You should have given up !

Dont like your voice, is it too high/low pitched - that can be solved by editing software like audacity
(just tried it and - yup made some 12 you old from youtube, sound like 40year old. lowerd pitch and raised tempo)

i feel some Déjà vu .....haven't i said this here already once ???

even if i like the idea of asking the community to record voice acting lines, i suggest you to think at something just like procedural voice generation.

We have plenty synthetic voices over the internet, and i think Fdevs should really think to dedicate efforts on this system and implementing their own voice simulator.
it should work as the procedurally generated planets, but for voices.

It allows a theorically infinite amount of Voices from NPC Players, using different accents, different tone pitch and different sentences. Very difficult but I'd be all for this.

The point about synthesised voices is that these days they can sound quite good. You could get them to say anything with no additional work like recording etc. Why limit what any AI could say by having recordings. Things will change as the game evolves and I think synthesis would support this evolution.

Voice synthesis may be doable in ED. They could add lots of radio static and pops to hide the funnies and not make it immersion breaking. At bit like the effects on the existing voice comms but turned up.

that's the point...plus you have to bear in mind that recorded voices could take a real amount of memory in our HD...instead the PG voices are basically generated on the fly...so no extra Hd updates....would be great having just to update a table with different sentences instead downliad 15GB of voices every update :)

EDIT: i think would be great having some combat voice chat noise in RES or in Conflict zones...take a look at the new Eve Valkyrie trailer and you have an idea of what i'm talking about

Exactly what I was thinking. Some slight distortion over the voices maybe too. You can get some interesting results by using voices with a vocoder which is all synthesised. It could distinguish the different races.

I don't know for sure but I think this type of thing isn't that CPU intensive.

There's more to voice than just speech. Emphasis, emotion, accents, I don't think you can do those justice with voice synth just yet. That's why we still have VAs.

That's true but how much emotion etc is conveyed in the current text used ? I think it would be a step in the right direction.

Wasn't the ship's voice overhauled into a voice synthesis system at some point during the beta, to make future variation possible?

However, I agree with metatheurgist. Enemies and other AI-commanders we meet should sound spiteful, feared, thankfull... depending on the actual situation. I haven't seen a voice sysnthesis that is able to do this, so far...
But it is definitely a worthwhile project for the future. Not only for games like Elite: Dangerous, but for general human-AI-interaction. (Computers are already able to interpret human emotions due to voice and facial expression. Now they need to emulate them themselves.)
