Void in Community Groups

(Apologies, this was supposed to go into the dangerous groups but it required a prefix to post and the option did not appear on my phone.)

Greetings,

I have been giving some thoughts on starting a group for a specific area that needs some exploration. However as I've been contemplating different types of organizations and the services they provide to the community I've noticed there is a somewhat of a gap.

Now we know ED doesn't have a story, just events that occur, and the logs of a few fellow commanders. Seeing as it is becoming more obvious the developers are hard sticking to their "sandbox" mentality, there is a need in the community for "GMs/DMs" to make or create content akin to a story.

Now I've been looking at third party programs to custom create quests. Is there by chance anyone that has done this or had experience with such?

Quite a lot of the time a shared spreadsheet and a chat channel or two is probably more than sufficient - I'd advise starting there and adding more complexity later if you need it: you'll need a pretty sizable group and set of objectives before that becomes too clunky.

I used the old Freespace 2 mission editor to put together a briefing video once. Very cheap if you wait for a sale and pretty easy to use. (Anything more complex than will fit easily into one of those will probably also go wrong in practice.)

Lots of the BGS groups have trackers for activities that might be possible to adapt. I think there are a couple of entry-level ones which are available for anyone to use, but it's not something I've looked into much.

Don't underestimate the amount of organisation needed - running an hour of event can easily take a week or more of planning and setup. Fancy tools don't necessarily help very much with that... some of the in-game things we might get with Squadrons later this year might, though.
