VR and all the little things

I've been thinking of getting a VR headset recently. Mostly because I've moved to Linux and haven't managed to get my tobii eye-tracker working yet.

Question I have is how is the 'not' VR in Odyssey work, and how does looking at a second screen with all the EDDB/Inara stuff work? Would I have to keep removing the immersion helmet?

Thanks for any insight

On foot VR in Odyssey is not good. You have a letterbox surround and no headtracking - you're in a small flat screen. It's Ok for me as I don't really engage in any FPS stuff, just occasionally take a stroll on a planet surface when out exploring. The in ship VR is still good, although there are performance issues, you'll need a pretty well specced PC. I use the Reverb G2, and I have a decent PC (i7 10700k, RTX 3080, 32GB and an SSD) and I still get stutters when opening maps, and sometimes menus. Otherwise it's fine.

Depending on the VR headset you get, some have the capability of inserting windows from your PC into the VR environment, at least they did. But I find it easier to lift the HMD and look at a second screen for the stuff I have to look at.
