VR and Elite

Just got VR and am amazed at how great elite looks in it. Those of you that have VR what is your favorite ship/flight deck in VR? I am astonished at the size of the ships and how much detail is put into them.

I use to not be a big fan of the Anaconda flight deck but I love it in VR. I didnt realize how big the ASPX was inside. The Vulture has 14 foot ceilings haha. In the Conda I need to becareful getting out of captains seat or Ill hit my head. Also need to watch my step so I dont fall down haha.

The other thing I noticed was looking all the hard points in outfitting was mind blowing. They are huge and very detailed. I was looking at the huge multi cannon on my cutter. It hangs right above the stairs coming into the ship so everyone boarding gets a nice look.

When I played in VR on the Rift DK2, I definitely preferred ships with small cockpits, like real life fighter jets. So I really likes the Sidewinder, the Imperial Courier, and the like. I did not like ships where the cockpit felt like a huge room around me, like the Asp or the Vulture. I like to feel like i could touch the stuff around me if I extended my hands.

I'm patiently waiting to experience VR again in ED when I receive my Pimax 8K sometime next year. I'd love to try the tiny fighters they added after I sold my DK2.

Ebbrell : Yeah, things absolutely look bigger. They look lifesize basically. When you approach a station, you see an actual giant station in front of your eyes. When you enter the slot, you realize how big it actually is, it doesn't look like a mailbox slot like it does on a monitor.

Elite is probably the best VR experience hands down. Try the Courier. Just about every ship is worth looking at, even the Side Winder. Elite in VR is just amazing! Take a Ship launched fighter on a canyon run. I sometimes spend hours doing that.

I've tried Vive and Oculus and things on Oculus look the right size (ie: impressively huge) but on the Vive everything seems about 2.3rds the scale it should be. I don't own either and only had a lend of them so didn't have much time to find any solution to the Vive issue but worth bearing in mind. Issue only seemed to be in Elite though.

Friend of mine just got VR and is banging on about how amazing it is.

I have a few reservations myself, the main one being the price tag. But I also think I'd love it and I'm concerned that total immersion into ED or any game is not that healthy for myself or my family.

I don't like the thought of being totally cut off from reality. Ideally I'd like to try it first to see if it's worth the investment. I feel it's one of those things you have to experience for yourself before you can really make a decision.

Work just bought me a Rift. I am struggling to go back to a monitor. It just feels like you are there. I fly a Cobra, I keep reaching up to the hand grabs it feels so real. The only downside is that once the headset is on I am out of reality. Not great when you have a family around. My lads have been scoffing VR for years, they are now both converts. Their comment is, "Wouldn't buy it because its too expensive, but if its there we will use it". They play Project Cars now only in VR. IMHO for certain types of games like ED, it's the best advance in gaming experience I have seen in recent years. The only downsides are the cost and the resolution which isn't quite there yet.

I'm waiting for the primax 8k before i jump into vr in Elite. Is it good?

do things look bigger

Well if you get one, let us know :)

I'm curious how this game performs with the resolution of a Pimax 8K. I own an Oculus Rift and a GTX1080. Running Elite on Ultra is not always a smooth experience despite the horse power.
This is the first VR headset generation of course and the graphics gards struggle a bit. Hopefully the manufacturers find a way to improve things considerably (chip design, algorithms, etc. I'm not an expert ...).

Since your days in VR there has been a tweak (in one of the recent patches) that sorts out scaling, it used to be the CMDR's and thus everything around them was scaled back, ie my ten year old son was about the same size as my CMDR. Now the CMDR is grown up size, and everything else has been scaled up marginally to reflect that. Of course making things bigger means they take up more pixels so the sense of detail is heightened, flip side of that is the narrow field of vision now seems a few degrees narrower. So your 200° FOV "8k" will be even better. You know its not really 8k as 8k would be 7680*4320 where as the pimax is going to be 7680*2160 - still better than a rift / vive at 1920*1200 but still a good few megapixels short of what the name intimates it should be.

Back to the OP I'd second the courier, or the clipper, both are lovely ships made better by VR :)

The other thing to try in VR is batman Arkham VR short campaign mode, but still amazing as you are batman, not just playing a game, for those few hours.

:) Not sure "probably" and "hands down" go well together.

Those of you that have VR what is your favorite ship/flight deck in VR?

All of them, as in VR you can appreciate the differences properly. I bought a second account in one of the recent sales, and it was the first time I'd been back in a Sidewinder since before I bought VR. It's small, but an awesome little ship. :)

I hated the Courier before VR too - the fact that the nose takes up far too much of your view. But again, in VR it all comes into perspective and I makes flying the ship a whole new experience.

I am struggling to go back to a monitor.

Simple solution: don't bother. :D The only time I load up E: D on a monitor now is if I just want to do something quickly at a station (e.g. if I'm waiting for stock to replenish). If there is any flying involved, it has to be in the Rift.

I just took the plunge and upgraded from a Python to an Anaconda. On a flat screen, it feels like all the other ships but with a big flat sprite looking front at the bottom of the screen. I’ve never liked any of the ships where the bridge is in the back for that reason. But in VR, the scale is there. Coming into a station, get a real sense of distance to the front of the massive ship....and I finally get to use a ship launched fighter! It’s so nice to have a crewman! It’s a whole new progression tree for me to work on.

I’m a one ship pilot. This one is gonna be my home for a while. Especially with that new chrome paint!

VR Conda club!

The fitting screen is quite an overlooked pleasure of VR. When I got my first headset I was travelling about in a Hauler. The first time I saw that Hauler in its full-sized glory on the fitting screen my first thought was "My Gawd! The Hauler's.... beautiful!"

My favorite ship in VR is the T-9. Sitting in a glass dome with your feet dangling over the stars, what a feeling!

I'll second the T-9 or T10 (both the same) massive cockpits! The iEagle and the sidewinder are my favourites though. Smaller ships just seems so much more realistic.

But honestly, they're all amazing.
