VR and/or SteamVR support on not-Steam Elite version

I understand that SteamVR will provide support for Elite Dangerous, being it for Vive or for Rift (even if in this case it will not be an optimal experience).

What I'm not sure I understand is if SteamVR works also for Elite copies bought out of the Steam store, therefore not launched through Steam (I know I can add manually to Steam, but with the launcher I see it as an additional step not really useful): does anybody know if SteamVR support is available also for Elite Dangerous/Horizon "standalone" ? If yes, how can it be enabled ?

Launcher should be absolutely irrelevant, the important thing is that the main game hooks into openvr_api, which does all the communication between elite and the head mounted display you are wearing.

Yes, Elite works in VR independent of Steam (I have a store copy).

However to use SteamVR you need to have the Steam program installed as you need this in order to install SteamVR. Once installed they do not need to be active nor in the background for Elite to take advantage of the wrapper. It only need be installed.

Thanks all for the replies: so, if I understood correctly, SteamVR is a separate download from Steam. I can download and install it and will work independently of the games being bought/managed through Steam store... am I right ?

SteamVR cannot be installed independent of Steam. It is found in the Library Tool section of Steam.

Elite Dangerous (bought from the Elite Store) does not require Steam (or anything from Steam to run).

However, to run Elite Dangerous in VR with Oculus SDK .8, you need to have SteamVR installed (which can only be installed through Steam). Neither Steam or SteamVR need be active, but they need to be installed.

You can, however run Elite Dangerous directly under the older Oculus 0.5 SDK although a lot of contortions are needed especially under windows 10.
