VR and Radeon 9070 XT - crashes on transitions

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on fixing this.

I put a Radeon 9070XT in and I can massively see the difference over my old card in VR. Smooth, I've been able to up the quality to 'High' and might be able to go further.

But I'm getting crashes on what I'd call transitions - switch to supercruise, from on-foot to SRV, SRV to ship etc. Other than that it's perfectly smooth. But those transitions, just end up with the game quitting and seeind a Frontier fault report window.

Does anyone have any tips on how I might be able to stop it crashing?

I didn't have the card configured properly the first time I ran ED, so I'm wondering if forcing it to re-do that shader thing it does at the start might be an idea - is there a way I can force it to re-generate whatever it's generating?

Interesting to hear of your experiences with the 9070 and VR. I installed a 9070 non XT yesterday to replace my radeon 5700.

I can't really help with your problem. All I did in ED since installing was go into supercruise, come out of supercruise and get blown up. I didn't have any crashes.

What I did have problems with though is image quality. Compared to my 5700 the 9070 was showing terrible jaggies on every edge and line. I hadn't adjusted any graphics settings when I was running the old card and didn't change anything for the new one. I understand this is to do with aliasing. Did you notice anything with your 9070? If not could you tell me what anti aliasing settings you are running?

The 2 games I tried briefly were ED and MSFS. On the standard settings I had the 9070 spent half the time with fan not running. It was obviously such a low workload for it that it didn't need much cooling.

I have the same problem :) - also new 9070XT and had alot of random crashes, menu, settings, map, etc. - so I ran the AMD clean utility to get rid of all old stuff.
After that now it seems it only happens on transition from SC to normal near stations. I currently trying to approach Felice City in YUN HSIE but no look. Tried already 3 times.

My guess is that there might be a problem with the driver and/or a specific graphic setting. I run it on VR High, went back from Ultra to check if that helps, but didn't.

Up to now I guess not much to do here, maybe trying to tinkering around with the graphics setting and see if something helps.

Ah, sorry you have it too. I wondered about power but it's a 1300W PSU. I completely reinstalled Windows on a new disk but no difference, still the crashes.

I've pretty much tried everything on and or off and I just can't make any headway at all.

I've just had a play in VR on my Q3 / 7900XTX - 25.3.1 drivers - in the hope that it was a driver issue, but ED behaved normally, even during transitions.

Hope your problems get ironed out soon!

I've found what the cause of the problem was for me at least - it looks like, for now, the SteamVR Motion Smoothing isn't working with this card. I turned it off and suddenly everything was reliable again.

It's in SteamVR settings, in 'General' or in 'Video'.

I've currently god my graphics settings at 'Mid', which is what they were on on my old card, but it still looks so much better. And without the warping caused by the Motion Smoothing it looks so crisp. I might try moving up to high tomorrow, but I'm just happy to have had an hour or two in there. Tried lots of jumps, had a loot around a settlement, in and out of SRV, boarding ship, and all back to mormal. And it's the most beautiful I've ever seen Elite Dangerous in VR by a long way.

It looked to me like, I think the Motion Smoothing inserts frames, like they got out of sync somehow and it just ended up bombing. I'm sure they'll fix it in time but I'm happy with it off and encouragingly, the card seems to be able to cope without it.

I hear the new cards have improved video encoders. One might speculate this could include an update to the functionality that compares two consecutive frames in order to to take a guess at which way what is depicted by each constituent pixel is moving, and how fast, and is presumably used by the motion smoothing for the same purpose.

Maybe Valve will fix it soon enough; Maybe it could even be something like a divide by zero issue, if something thinks there is no time whatsoever from one frame to its successor during the blackout/switchover... :p

No matter to this one user, one way or the other; Never use motion smoothing -- can't stand the artifacts. :7

So just gave it a short shot with smoothing off and was able to land. Overall looks smooth so far with VR High, but will check in the evening with longer sessions. Thx @holdenballs for figuring this out :)

What I see is that in ED also the vrcompositor is munching basically all RAM (32GB) which I experienced in ets2 yesterday, while trying to get it running. I think there is a driver or steamvr issue with the new cards. In ets2 it overflows the ram and starts swapping, which makes it unplayable, will check there with smoothing off too the next days.
I also think with smoothing on it also overflows in ED - and ED doesn't like it ^^ and crashes because of that.

What I also see is a quite underutilization of the GPU in ED and ETS2, just 50-75% and quite low powerdraw (100-150W), but that could also be caused by a CPU limit on my side (only a 1800x currently, upgrade comes later this year).

Update: Played around 6hrs on VR Ultra, was nice and smooth no crashes - slight stutter on transitions for a couple of frames, nothing dramatic. (Just trading, no heavy fighting.)
