VR and side panel - view down

Hi,

To activate the side panels in elite dangerous (HTC Vive) I have to look left or right, and down... too much down, therefore it is hard to continue looking there while manipulating the panels.
So my question is, would it be possible to setup this so I do not have to look down that much to activate the side panels?

Thanks

I can't open the game at the moment to tell you exactly where, but I think the controls can be redefined to open panels too without just looking. I know the keyboard number keys used to do that as default (but that for me was a long time ago before I got into VR), and I've personally set a switch on my X52 to open the Comms panel so I think it can be done for all the others too.

I doubt it can be done in VR, or, even if it is possible, I doubt we should do it. As the effect of opening the comm panel for instance moves the view to the left, to the comm panel. And if you're looking forward in VR, with the view moving left, it can leads to nausea or issues with VR.
In VR you need the view to follow your head, at all times...

No, if you open them with a switch, it does not force you to view them. You can still look forward and then glance at the panel when needed. You just need to also close them manually. Be warned that if you use your HOTAS to navigate the panels, then those switches won't be available for PIPS, thrusters, or whatever, until you close the panel. I use Voice Attack to open/close the panels.

What you can do is assign keys (or buttons on your HOTAS etc.) to open each panel, but this will not move your viewpoint, so no nausea issues. Make sure you have "Looking at X Panel" (in Mode Switches section) set to "Does nothing". So you will need to press the button, then turn your head, but at least this way you can choose how far you want to turn your head whilst looking at the panel.

As for your original problem of having to look down too much, I've not seen anyone else mention that, so perhaps it is worth running through the sensor+HMD setup again. I have a Rift not a Vive but I know that just moving/rotating the sensor just a little bit can make a big difference to the position of my head in-game.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the answers, will check about opening the panels with a switch.
About the sensors, the vive does not work like that. It uses lighthouses, and the tracking is perfect, it really moves my view the way my head moves. Maybe though I could try centering the view with F12 key with my head a bit lower or a bit higher to check what it does. As my issue with the current setup is that if I want to look straight at the top of the panel it closes the panel :) Will check a few things. I have found a Vive config on those forums, and an X55 config on steam I will try with elite dangerous...

Yes, turn the auto pop-up option off and assign buttons for each panel.

I use a hat on my Warthog Hotas stick, L/R for the two main panels, up cycles through all the panels, and down cycles my weapon groups.

I can turn a panel on when looking away, and a panel stays up until I press the button again, so momentarily looking away (target etc, whatever) doesn't force you to wait while the panel redraws etc.

Guess I'll do that. The X55 setup I'll use have some buttons assigned to things I do not intend to use, like trackIR as I have a VR headset, or unassigned things, guess I'll find out some place to open or close the panels :)

As an aside; When the role panel was first added, its on-look target was larger and higher up, but this changed already in the next patch. I presume there may have been complaints about it opening unwanted.
