VR argh just not sure

Greetings o7
Just a comment and maybe a ask for help if ya can.
First, I have been playing Simms for years and years, new elite for about 4, Love the game, not bored at all. Lol Any way I have head tracker and a 4X 34 inch monitor that I have been playing with for long time.
Got the rift for Christmas, Got to say a lot of the games are just fantastic.
Not sure about Elite… The VR experience is amazing, Just not as Beautiful as on the monitor…
Crap, not sure how to state what I am saying, I really liked just looking at very beautiful suns and planets on the monitor... The Rift just not near as crisp or colorful it seems, but the VR is amazing also for the depth of the ship and field.
Almost want to go back to the headtrack and great monitor, But the VR, lololol ARGH.
So now the Question
What do you guys think? Is there a way to get a better picture through the rift? Any settings I could try? I have read about a few things, and they seemed to help but still hoping for more…
What cha think?
Will I have to wait a year or two for a better resolution headset, several patches from frontier, lol?
Or just suck it up because the VR is amazing? Lololo Man that VR stuff is amazing, anybody play dead and buried? It came with the rift, Man that’s fun, VR is the wave of the future
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help get it better.
Thanks for any help Commanders
Good Evening from New Mexico USA…

Good Evening from New Mexico USA…

There's settings in Elite's options menu for graphics in VR. You would need to change it, for example, from "Ultra" to "VR Ultra," to better suit the Rift. There's a few settings you'd have to fiddle with in there.

Beyond that, it's going to be less about the game putting out a patch - after all, the game can provide bright, dlear imagery on a regular monitor - so much as it is the specs of the VR headset.

What graphics card do you have?

My recommendation would be to avoid the in-game VR profiles. Your aim should be to put HMD Image Quality as high as possible to increase overall sharpness (if you have a decent 1080 you should be able to manage 1.50, higher if you have a 1080ti), leaving Super Sampling set to 1.0. Setting AA to SMAA will improve text sharpness and somewhat decrease jagged edges on straight lines and edges. Change the UI colour scheme from the default Orange to a light-blue or green scheme (google is your friend here or use the ED Profiler tool) - this will make text more readable and reduce 'god rays' on the UI elements. But unfortunately there is not much you can do about the 'shimmering', which for me is the most annoying thing about ED in VR.

Experiment with different settings until you have an image quality you can live with whilst maintaining frame rates in the 75-90 region and letting ASW kick in from time to time.

I know exactly what you are talking about OP. The visuals are below monitor and as a professional cg graphic artist, i was actually a little disappointed. But actually, it added so much to the gameplay, that i now can't play without VR. Also updating my rig to a 1080 ti did a big step forward in graphics quality. Being able to play in VR ultra with maxed settings and 1.5 x supersampling really enhances the visual quality a lot (especially, when coming from a GTX970 on VR low - medium).
If you already have a decent card, try setting the VR quality to high, turn up the supersampling and then work yourself through the settings until you hit the right spot between quality and frames per second for you. Station interiors and crowded ice rings are ideal locations to do this.

Believe me, it is worth the time.

Have fun CMDR

Had Oculus with 980 Nvidia . and for a while 1080ti. can’t see a difference. or don’t remember correctly.

But the thing is VR is hard to use. my face is getting hot. after a while I have to stop playing. quit game and switch to TRACKIR 4 I have.

I personally think this has more to do with the "plug and play" philosophy, which I believe Elite Dangerous & VR is certainly not the case...

I mean, to get the best out of the VR experience with Elite, you need to dedicate some time and love so that it gets to work to its best.

I am also a newbie, and have tried the VR for the first time few days ago. My second through (after the initial wow moment) was that everything was blurry and pixelated, but after spending two days trying different graphical settings, I can say now that the experience has drastically improved.

There is also a very important physical part involved. You need to get used to the feeling of VR, to the sensations and the reactions that this new enhanced reality induces at your mind and body (at least that is my case, I'm still getting used to it).

All in all I think it is an impressive step towards realism and intensity of the gaming experience. Today I landed my Cutter in a planet base and it was just impressive by all means. I could see and almost feel the lateral movement of the ship like I never did before with my monitor. The situational awareness that the VR provides is unparalleled, so I plan to keep playing Elite with it, even if my Ultra-Wide monitor still manages to bring a lot more crispy and cristal clear image, but the VR just brings up the table so many more things...

Thank you for all the comments, I love the VR exsperiance. hands down .. I have been playing with settings, i have a gtx 1070, good card, will continue to tweak it, as i am a 62 year old pilot, been flying and simm flying everything i could get my hands onsince the late 70s. lol i dont have much problem with motion sickness, even though i landed in the dark first time on a very hilly planet, srv was a little wild, lololol, any way to mellow that out? Been waiting for VR long time, cant go back, even though the head tracker added a lot too. Any way its only going to get better

Thanks for your time commanders o7

Thank You o7

Assuming you mean the steering/traction was over-sensitive, remember it differs depending on the surface type and gravity. If you play using a HOTAS you could try setting sensitivity curves using something like Joystick Gremlin (or you could use the TARGET software if you have a Thrustmaster T.16000M or Warthog).

I am a Star Citizen convert that has just purchased the complele Elite Dangerous package so I could enjoy it with my new HTC VIVE. But as I have read above about the complexity of getting started - I am at a total loss for all that is required to get this up and running at the best quality while also trying to figure out how to fly and work with the interface (in VR). Are there any VR based groups/squads that I could join that cater to the new VR players?

Thanks,

RedCovert, do you have Discord? If so, I can help out. I have an Oculus Rift, but I imagine the experience is mostly the same aside from launching the game in Oculus Home versus Steam or whatnot. I'm a Star Citizen player as well, but I'm waiting for that to get better at performance (and hopefully get VR, but that'll be some time away). I am relatively new to Elite. But I've been playing a week and have the hang of most of the controls. I'm using an XBOX Controller.

It's a bit of a downer to think you have your settings pretty much optimized, then you fly to a station or something because you've been in deep space and notice frame drops. But yeah, overall Elite VR is quite the experience.

Hey Blubadger, sorry .. late to this thread.

First thing I recommend is to install drkaii's EDProfiler. It makes tweaking your settings much easier to do and also gives you an easy way to share your settings in this thread (via a screenshot of the EDProfiler screen). You can find it here:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...er-Robust-Settings-Profiler-Switcher-Detector!

The other great thing is that it provides a way of maintaining two sets of ED graphics settings, one for use on the monitor and one for use in VR (more on this in a minute).

As for recommended settings, it does depend on your system spec's somewhat but generally - turn Bloom, Blur, DOF, Ambient Occlusion and Anti Aliasing off. Set shadows to High or lower as it's quite an expensive GPU calculation. Set SS to 1.0 and HMD Image Quality to something like 1.5 (maybe 1.25). Set Volumetric Effects Quality to Low or Medium. Set everything else to Ultra. Reduce Gamma until space is black. I'd also recommend reducing the HUD brightness and pick an easier to read set of HUD colours (drkaii's "Spiritual Teal" set works well).

Now, when you run the game go to somewhere like a hi-tech space station (one of the bright white ones) or a planetary base. Press Ctrl+Numpad 1 to temporarily turn off the Oculus ASW (Asynchronous SpaceWarp) feature (which otherwise locks fps to either 45 or 90) and press Ctrl+F to get the framerate displayed in the bottom left corner of your monitor. Peer at this down the nose gap of the Oculus. If it's 90fps most of the time (or very close) then all to the good and you can try increasing some of those settings (e.g. the HMD Quality). If it's well below 90fps then you should wind down those settings (try to keep HMD Quality above 1.0 tho).

Re: the beautiful visuals on the monitor ... I know exactly what you mean and sadly you're just not going to match those with current VR technology. Unlike the "there's no going back" brigade I currently play ED about 75% of the time on the monitor and 25% in VR and am entirely happy doing so. I love the crisp, clear, beautiful graphics on-screen and also really like taking screenshots and making videos. However, there's nothing like the feeling of being in VR, especially for activities like mining so I love doing that too. Having a headtracking solution really helps to lessen the pain of going back to the monitor after VR and these days I'm really happy switching back and forth.

Good luck!

I would just add to Alec's great advice by saying make sure you have the headset on your face correctly, and do configure the little switch under the RH side of the headset. Having the headset on your face a few Cm' out and the eye adjustment not set correctly will give you a bad graphical experience.

But Please do get Dr Kaii profiler. it is almost a MUST HAVE if you are using VR and Monitor to plat ED!!

Can we just sticky threads like this? A lot more people are getting into VR these days, and the same questions will always come up about quality, comfort, performance, etc. The stickies are getting a bit outdated....
