VR ELITE

I have Horizons and Odyssey both.
What version of the game VR uses in steam and what version is recommended if You can ever choose.
Is it possible to choose Horizons or Odyssey for VR?
As I understood Walking in VR is not possible?

Also bonus question - what does change when You change resolution in-game while playing VR version?

Vive Pro 2 here.

Legacy is by far the best version for VR.

You can play either version in VR, but in Odyssey the view will switch to a floating flat screen when you're walking around outside of the ship. Also, last time I tried it the performance was not good enough to play without feeling sick (on an AMD RX6600XT and a Quest 2). There have been a few performance patches since then though so it might be a bit better now - it will depend a lot on your hardware.

No idea about Steam - I play either Odyssey or Horizons 4.0 in VR, but I bougth the game from FD directly and use the standard FD launcher. Recommendation would depend on your hardware, though - Ody/4.0 is still demanding more hardware resources than Legacy/3.8. And, as also already mentioned, Ody in VR will switch to a simulated flatscreen mode once you leave the ship.

In-game, I'll assume that's independent from Steam - so what changes is the resolution the game is mirrored on your display. I.e., you have two viewpoints - once in the headset and once on your PC display. Resolution setting is applied to the PC display, not the headset.e e a

And: we have a VR subforum ;)

I'm still using a 980TI and Oculus CV1 on medium, and a few high, VR settings and I have zero issues at all in Odyssey.
Just built a brand new RTX 4090 rig and HP Reverb G2, but the G2 is DOA and needs to be RMA'd...Unhappy Cmdr :(
So It is possible to play VR even without Steam?
Every VR device? I am curios about my Pro 2.
My Oculus CV1 doesn't use Steam VR, but I'm sure the Pro 2 does.

Speaking for Legacy, yes. I found the Steam Overlay stole some performance, so I used to launch Horizons from my Oculus app instead, even though I bought Horizons on Steam. I'm not sure if this is still the case or not, but it worked for me a year or so ago.

Depends on where (and when) you bought the game from. I have two accounts directly from FD, and I used both my even older Rift and my now also considered old HP Reverb without Steam - but, for the Reverb, with SteamVR (which runs without Steam, but needs to be downloaded from Steam).
As for "any" headset I wouldn't know - but the claim is for any Windows Mixed Reality (compatible) headset.

I actually just played for an hour or two the other day with my Index and it seemed to play just fine, but there were some graphical issues that I think are more tied to Nvidia and Windows 11 at the moment. I had forgotten just how much the free looking and depth of view improved the game.

That said, if you are planning to do anything on foot, I wouldn’t bother booting up in VR. As was mentioned above, the game will switch to a flat panel floating in front of you. Personally I felt this to be a very jarring transition as you go from having depth of view to suddenly having none. But also, you end up dealing with the drawbacks of wearing the headset without having the benefits. Honestly, you would have a better experience taking the headset off entirely and doing the on foot portions on a normal monitor.

The flip side is you constantly need to change into and out of 3D mode, which I would argue is more disrupting than just getting over it and getting used to the 2D screen. I get in and out of the ship so fequently that this doesn't work for me, and I refuse to fpy in 2D. Also switching to 2D on the fly isn't viable if your VR cckpit isn't where your monitors are (like me).

I would much prefer if ED knew when you took the headset off and gave you a screen with your normal flatscreen settings. Or if not, then at least 2 different screen settings saves, one for VR and one for flatscreen so that you could easily switch settings.

That would surely be nice. But even if the game provided that, if you want to immerse yourself in the game (and let's face it, that is a big part of using VR), taking off the headset and putting it back on is very immersion breaking. So I would probably not bother either way.

But I recognize I may be in the minority, and I really don't mind the virtual screen. Even if there is the fade and the switch to the virtual screen when disembarking, it is not as big a disruption as taking of my headset, seeing my chaotic appartment and especially office, and debating with myself if I continue to play or go clean up. Right now, I don't see it, so I can keep playing :). Joking aside, taking off the headset really pulls me out of the game.

Yeah... I'll rather suffer the virtual cinema screen, than have to take the HMD on and off all the time, and it is still not by far as unimmersive as playing on monitor.
I may find the black screen transition even more offputting than the cinema screen, actually -- loading screens are ten times as annoying in VR as they are otherwise...
(Didn't help when I was taught the lesson, the other day, that waiting for the black screen to pass, is quite enough time for a bunch of pirates to drop on your location, grill you inside the vehicle, and walk away, job done, with still a few more seconds to go, of whirring and clomping sounds, before you get the suddenly very firey view back. :p)

I used to play with the Oculus Rift but stopped doing it when Odyssey came out. I went back to the Tobii Eyes which works very well but you have to center and lock the view when on foot as you can't aim and the image floats around. I really wish they would fix this.

At this juncture, they refuse to even acknowledge it any longer. I think that's ridiculous considering the external camera view works on foot.
