VR for ARX

I expect someone has already suggested this but would you pay ARX to add basic VR support for Odyssey? It looks like Frontier are continuing down the real money for in-game stuff path, and I'd be prepared to pay far more for them to fix things than buy imaginary spaceships and make them look pretty.

I've been playing ED since the beta and it is so frustrating knowing it took one guy about a day to add VR support to Elite. I know the excuse that it would take too much time to add proper VR support, but pretty much anyone that plays Elite in VR doesn't care about getting motion sickness or hand controllers; we just want to enjoy being in VR.

Getting out of your VR spaceship and being greeted with a super low resolution cinema screen surrounded by a grey box with the worst anti-aliasing implemented since the creation of space invaders, has to be the most jarring experience in the history of gaming! The SRV is in VR, the actual jump sequence of a carrier suddenly reverts to VR if you are sat down on the bridge, everything else is in VR, apart from walking. It really can't be that difficult for them to add it to walking around. They could even add it so it only works in the xenobiology suit and I'd be happy, so long as they look to fix the terrible anti-aliasing while they are at it!!

Just putting it out there having had a long break from the game, as I'm remembering why I had a long break; one guy a day! My favourite game ruined because someone won't uncomment or add in a line of code. I'd pay 50000 ARX is they did. The anti-aliasing is another issue but perhaps they could add a 'visual enhancement pack' and rinse me for another 50000 ARK for that!

The aliasing issue in VR is my main concern at the moment. Legacy Horizons looks significantly sharper with very little aliasing or shimmer. I just paid for the Odyssey expainsion, so I consider my money to the Devs already sent!

I pledged to pay extra for completed VR long ago, and that pledge stands.

After the the initial development cost has been recouped, however, it should fold into the "base game", for VR players who arrive later.

Yeah, I feel your pain but they are never going to fix that unless they can make money doing it. If they CBA to turn VR on they aren’t going to spend serious time working out why Odyssey wrecked AA.

They aren’t game developers anymore and haven’t been for a long while. They are selling DLC on a store and the only hope of getting things fixed is making it DLC. I’ve got a lifetime expansion pass btw and paid £100 for this game. So trust me; I’m bloody annoyed.

Short of a class action lawsuit I can’t see them ever honouring that 🙁

I'll persist in my assessment that Odyssey did not "wreck" AA. It was always exactly this bad.

However, terrain now has some materials with more specularity, and more high frequency detail, sampled from prefabbed bitmaps, sometimes sparsely, depending on LOD/Mipmap level, which inherently exhibits more aliasing, compared to the more diffusely shaded- and gently undulating surfaces of Horizons -- I'll even keep my old wondering around, whether the old terrain and rounded rocks may to boot have been drawn in a separate forward rendering pass, and only switched to deferred like the rest of the game, when they needed the more advanced materials with the new terrain compositor.

Man-made environments also lend themselves "better" to aliasing, with all those skinny, shiny shapes, and orthogonal angles (without any head-roll), viewed at near range.

But the antialiasing... it was always bad.

Opening up the improvement for everybody after ROI, you mean? -I don't think think that would be out of the question, given Horizons became the base game, when Odyssey released.

I'd be more worried about outbursts from selfish players who would deny others later getting something "for free", that they paid for earlier.

If it was about my use of the word "pledge", I did not mean it in a transactional sense -- I "pledged" as in: "made a promise out into thin air, here on the forum"; I signed no contract with expectation of reciprocation about it, and it has nothing to do with Kickstarter. :7

Sorry I misunderstood you. I’d be quite happy if they gave it to everyone for free the next day! I just want it in the game.

I don’t remember Horizons being so bad on AA but it has been a long time since I played it. I just remember being horrified the first time I landed on a planet with Odyssey.

I would totally pay for a VR support of on foot Odyssey ! Totally !

The most frustrating right now is that it looks so good with the camera suit !
I really do not underatand....

Please Fdev, work on on-foot VR support, we'll pay you !

It would depend on what sort of VR implementation we are talking about.

If it's just basically little more than a third option to toggle a similar view to the HUD on the free camera ... then, maybe I would.
Full VR, with controller support etc ... no. At least not up front; I love ED, but I simply do not trust that FDEV could do a good job of it. If they implemented it and charged for it afterwards, I don't think I could run it smoothly so I doubt I would pay for it, or the previous option to be honest.

If however they were to add an option to reduce the HUD size on the floating screen to be more central with our view, then move the screen forward, give it a curve ... more of a 180 view, I could be perhaps persuaded for that.

That probably wouldn't take much effort on their part, but would it be cost effective? Doubtful :(
