VR Graphic Settings I Quest 3 I RTX 3080

o7 CMDRs,

Just upgraded to the Quest 3 (from Q2) and I am sort of struggling to get beyond medium settings (wireless) and wanted to seek fellow CMDRs experience on what they can crank it up to. My rig:
  • RTX 3080
  • Intel i5 12 Gen
  • 32 RAM DDR5
I mainly sit in my cockpit so happy to change to cable link but prefer wireless. Happy to use Steam VR App or VD too.

Thank you & Happy Lunar New Year from Saigon, Vietnam CMDRs!

I'm on a 3070 and use VR medium or VR low. Still looks great and I get good performance out of it with Snapdragon upscaling in the headset and asynchronous space warp kicking in from time to time.

Happy New Year for next Saturday 😁👍

Questions:
  • Are you playing Odyssey or Legacy?
  • How are you launching the game? (Epic/Steam/Oculus Store/Stand alone)
  • When you say medium settings, are you using the presets or doing each setting individually?
I play Odyssey with a Quest 3 with RTX 4070ti + i7 11700 + 32GB DDR4 and have mostly High/Ultra settings, SS 1.0 + HMDQ 1.25 and performance is mostly fine with a few drops to ASW in busy areas - the Q3 is set at 72Hz 4128x2208.

I generally use a Link cable for seated games but use AirLink with Elite on occasion (I have the stand-alone launcher version) and haven’t had many problems - very occasionally there is a slight graphical corruption with lighting in a strip across the top 20% of the display (I believe this is related to AirLink encoding) but using the Galaxy map clears it.

  • Playing Odyssey and launch game from stand alone ie desktop
  • Game setting at ultra/max everything possible, Upscaling @ Normal, SS @ 1.0, HMD @ 1.25
  • Q3 is at 72Hz 4128x2208 with 5GHz WiFi connection to router (about 2m away)
  • RTX 4090 + AMD 9 5950x + 32GB DDR4 + Gen4 SSD + PC wired to router
  • I use OpenComposite + OpenXR Toolkit & Virtual Desktop with its OpenXR Runtime option enabled + Virtual Desktop Codec AV1 10-bit (Quest 3) mode.
  • I don't use Steam VR / Oculus App or Oculus Link
I personally got the biggest improvements in performance and image quality by switching to Virtual Desktop + OpenComposite + OpenXR Toolkit and completely bypassing SteamVR / Oculus App or Oculus Link.

Some others have had issues with running OpenComposite + OpenXR Toolkit, but these are not needed to run just Virtual Desktop, which I believe gave me the biggest improvent. I would recommend trying Virtual Desktop.

o7 and thank you for replying CMDR. In answer to your questions:
  • Odyssey
  • Epic or Steam
  • This refers to medium quality setting in game. I also have SS at 1.0 and HMD set to 1.5
Like I said happy to move to link cable if I can get higher graphic settings otherwise save up time for RTX4070Ti++ series.

o7 & thank you again,

o7 CMDR, I do use VD but been try the native Steam VR one. I am thinking of may be upgrade so I can get Ultra settings too. Thank you.

o7 & thank you again,
First thing I’d do is drop HMD Quality to a lower level - I use 1.25 with a 4070ti + i711700 - and if you’re running though Steam make sure there isn’t any SuperSampling going on there. Also check your Link resolution and frequency.

Odyssey, unfortunately, doesn’t have great performance in VR and requires a fair bit of tinkering. My preference is best graphics settings and then increase the rendering to what my PC can handle - with the Quest 3 at 72Hz + 4128x2208 and game settings High/Ultra, the best HMDQ I can manage is 1.25

Using a Link cable won’t allow higher settings but might give you a better quality image. The new headset update that is rolling out now has improvements to PCVR so hopefully some of the wireless sliced encoding issues have been solved.

Thank you CMDR Arioch. Will play around with HMD and see how it pans out. o7
