VR Ground Vehicle Suggestion

I have been playing Elite since the beta. Mostly I was on xBox, but recently switch and even transferred my account to PC because of VR. That was painful. I was Elite in Explore and Trycoon in trading.

Anyway, I have been playing now in VR for several months with Virtual Desktop and my Quest. It is awesome! I really love it.

I have to be careful, however, because I can get sick pretty easy. When auto docking, for example, I close my eyes or look right at something stationary in my ship or I start to feel queazy.

Last night was the first time I used a ground vehicle. I was not prepared for how fast and intensely sick I got. I started sweating and felt sick and wow, it was the worst I have ever felt.

I had to get the resources so I soldiered through and just closed my eyes a lot and hoped I wouldn't crash as I bounced over the rocks and hills.

Finally I got back to my ship with the materials I needed and took a moment. I had read that once you are sick you have to stop, but I really wanted to upgrade my FSD and wanted to see what would happen if I just kept playing.

Well, once back in my ship after about 10 minutes I was actually feeling better. I played for another hour or so and was still a little off, but mostly better.

So I have been thinking about why the land vehicle made me so sick. The only thing I can think of is the intense bouncing and moving that happens in a land vehicle in ED.

So my idea is why not make a "ground" vehicle that is basically a ship that flies steady and straight, but isn't allowed to go very high off the ground? I can totally fly my actual ship close to the surface and don't get motion sickness. If I bank and roll too much I do get sick, but not when I fly pretty steady.

I would love to see a hover craft type ground vehicle that has all the abilities of the current SRV. This would allow me to play ground VR without getting sick.

Have you tried the SRV comfort options? I use “maintain vehicle horizon” which really dampens down the bouncing view - the SRV rotates around you instead.

Edit: another trick for motions that tickle the nausea trigger - and this might sound a bit daft - is to ‘lean’ into them or try to do the motion that your body would do. This tries to match your inner ear to what your eyes see - it’s something I did when starting FPS VR games, walking on the spot instead of just standing.

As for your floater ship idea - I’d be massively up for a speeder bike once Odyssey drops, just to get the full Mandalorian experience 😁

The problem is that your visual 'sense' of balance has you bumping around all over the place while your actual sense of balance 'knows' you are sitting still, so you brain gets confused and this then upsets your stomach (and I experience this whenever I am using the SRV)! You can get used to the difference between the 'real' and 'visual' sense of balance by logging out and taking a ten minute break as soon as you start to feel queasy. Over time you get used to the difference, to the point where it no longer affects you. However, if you try to tough it out instead, you will not only feel very unwell, you will also have some cleaning up to do!
