VR Guest Ride-a-Along (non-player MultiCrew)

ED in VR is pretty spectacular. I have a bunch of friends who have Rifts but no HOTAS or ED. Doing ED properly (IMHO) requires a HOTAS which can be a pretty big investment (almost as much as the Rift).

Anyway....

It would be interesting if FDEV could/would distribute the game in sort of a "demo" mode which enabled "guest" ride-a-longs (as MutiCrew)... Folks could download the game (for free) and then ride-a-along as a passenger with an established CMDR. (They would NOT be able to interact with anything). If they liked the game they could then buy a license key, HOTAS, etc...

Although it would require download and installation of the game (and running in some MultiCrew "observer" mode), I think I know of several folks who would likely buy the game if they could just do a VR ride-a-long...

It would be fun for friends and family (if they had a PC and maybe a VR headset), likely sell more copies of the game, and be the ONLY thing which might make MutiCrew worthwhile (IMHO)!

$0.02

Have been doing this with most of my mates who use VR, pretty much the only reason why I wanted multi crew. Really is a game changer to have friends and family ride along with you.

Spent over an hour in a Cobra MKIII just chatting and cruising around the Cannon ship GNOSIS with my girlfriend last night, both of us in VR (She's 6000km away in Bahrain) 1000x better than any skype call we've had.

I doubt FD would offer it free, not exactly what I'd call expensive anyway, especially for people that already have an HMD

I know FDEV is pretty busy coding new hairstyles and party hats for holo-me, but I think it would be to their benefit to work some sort of observer/preview/ride-along mode into the product. I got no skin in the game (I got mine!), but I think the more people who experience this (VR in particular) the more sales they will make.

$40 can still be a lot of money for a game if you are not convinced you really want it (particularly if there might also be a HOTAS purchase in your future).

How about just a 30-day free demo after someone creates their account? Maybe no code changes to the game are even required (just the login rights offered up from the servers)...

(Although I do think an observer seat with no command/control delegation would still be a reasonable thing to have. Does a "mentoring" option already provide this?)

Very cool way to keep in touch. I like this.

Oh I like this idea.

Been suggested by family, so I'd more than happy to get an extra account , if there was a ride alone mode, MC avatar but none of the responsibility nor benefits.

Just a seat with a view, voice Comms and access to the camera suite

Yeah, definately. Also, allow people to multicrew into an SRV, just as a spectator (but also you know, make it work for the main game too, like they really shuold have before thinking about releaseing multicrew!) because that would be super cool.

I also like the idea.

Not everyone I know likes to watch twitch, and itd be a fantastic way to help immerse people in the experience without overwhelming them with any of the nitty gritty needed to enjoy the experience presently

Another possibility would be to use the 'Home' area.

I have seen several adverts for games in the 'apartment' that you sit in when choosing games, and there have been whole new 'apartments' sometimes. Trying to choose games with a 20 foot zombie breathing down your neck is... disconcerting.

So, how cool would it be to sit in your armchair in an apartment overlooking a landing pad in a Coriolis station?
Looking through your games and checking notifications while an Anaconda thunders overhead getting shouted at by the flight controllers?

It should be reasonably easy to do (basically a copy of the old E : D screensaver assets) and would be a good introduction to the game for people who haven't seen it.

first step towards Elitelegs too... ;)

Since I got my Rift I have been spending a lot more time in the game. This is a pretty cool idea as ED is about the best VR thing there is.

I think a very long time ago I suggested this :

Publish an ELITE : Dangerous Benchmark with various Demo Loops just showcasing the Game

- allows to Benchmark and compare your System (duh)
- but also is a great advertising multiplier, especially if the Benchmark is well-made and end up being used my Review Websites/Magazines etc.
- naturally also showcases its VR experience
- can be a superb advertising tool to showcase the best parts of the Game, attracting Custumers (Hey this looks super-sweet! Wait, this is actually a Game and I could play it ?!)

As a Bonus, one could have allowed i.e. CQC Matches as a Free-to-Play component in an attempt to increase its population and general accessibility and further advertise the ELITE Universe.

I must say this would be awesome.

I have been meaning to try this too starting with my wife who is 4000 km away around the world and later to my friends but when I bought the base account, I was also required to buy the horizons expansion. So we gave up on that idea.

If they could just download a spectator game mode with no controls other than communicate or exit.. then that would be marvellous and could definitely be a +1 point for Multicrew.

Bonus points if they get spacelegs to walk around the cockpit.
