VR Headset advice for ED (PC)

Hi Commanders,

I've just finished relocating from west to east and now i've pretty much settled into my new home i'd like to take a look at VR for my much loved Elite Dangerous.

Finance is always an issue (Moving house is expensive!) but I would now like to spend a few quid (jk) on VR.

My rig is more than capable of running VR, what I don't know is all those little things you need to get the full experience - You know, "I got a <Insert Brand> Headset but soon discovered you really need X,Y & Z to get it running right..."

Now as I've never tried VR - Not since the 90's anyway! I don't want to splash cash on something new and shiney, that may make me sick and I have to sell 4 days later at a massive loss.

This is where you experienced VR peeps come in..

Your recommendations for a 'Used' VR headset that works well with ED - I don't want to spend more than £200 (without good reason, but may be persuaded) in a PC VR setup that will let me have a taster, safe in the knowledge that if I can't get on with VR due to making me ill, I can sell it on without losing too much of my invested cash.

Many thanks in advance

UK or USA? I have an old CV1 that you could borrow if you are in the UK (The straps are held together with tape, works great tho)

Wouldn't recommend anything less than a CV1 paired with a 1080TI, others will say you can go lower, true, but if you want locked 90 FPS, smooth performance with everything on ultra and high SS/HMD levels, 1080TI or higher.

You can go lower, you'll probably complain about visuals and feeling sick.

Some great HMD's on the market now, check out the VR sub forum. Whatever you choose, prepare to have your mind blown.

For a used one, I would go with the Oculus Rift CV1. IThe screens look much better then the original HTC Vive. Also make sure you have two trackers. That will really help. I had one and kept loosing tracking.

I now have a pimax (using a 2070), and I think it is superb. Love it.

I’ll back up the above re graphics card.

I’d never tried it and didn’t have the system capacity at the time so upgraded but only to a 1070 (on advice.)

I love it but am lucky not to suffer any motion sickness at all and have a high tolerance of such things. I cap mine to 60fps and rarely fall below 45 but in Open at busy locations it can dip into the high 30s’ and I’m very glad at that point that I am the way I am.

I’ll be upgrading by the end of the year and despite my lack of trouble will be looking forward to seeing better performance.

Lower settings and tips and tricks help but if you’re going to do it you may as well get it right from the start.

My HMD is the original Odyssey and it’s amazing, though the fit is a very personal thing. Sharp, colourful and all text is very clear.

I would reiterate what has been said about checking your pc really is up to it. I bought a Lenovo explorer in a rush when they were on offer a while back and my pc can't cope beyond deep space solo situations. I now have to decide whether it is worth spending hundreds upgrading my gpu which I wouldn't otherwise do or to get rid of the vr.

The other issue to check is the distance between your eyes (IPD) and check that against the range covered by the headset you consider. I don't think I have unusually wide set eyes but my diy measurements show my ipd to be a few mm bigger than the max range covered by the wmr headsets.

Firstly many thanks for the advice. I knew you commanders would come through with the goods, so thank you all.

777Driver - I would be foolish not to accept your very generous offer of loaning your CV1 - I do happen to be in the UK! - How would you like to proceed? :D PM?

Also handy to know that my meager 1070 card won't deliver Ultra Settings I enjoy in non VR - So I guess I would just have to lower the detail for a smooth but less detailed image.

I guess I need to keep saving the £££ for a 1080Ti AND a Rift! How much can you get for a kidney? :D

You probably will find a cheap rift the best. If you have option to try one, I'd go with that first. Software is a big download and you have to sell your online soul to Mark Z.

Re gpu, I have a 980ti and that fine, so you have to have the best. You can get a few glitches, but mostly it's pretty smooth.

I'm waiting for higher resolutions in next VR headsets. Then it will be incredible.

My laptop has a 1070 on board and drives the CV1 very well - a 'proper' one should even allow you a little SuperSampling to wind up the detail level a little :)

I ran a 1070 with the DK2 (everything on ultra) I don't think it will cut it with the CV1, my 1080TI could just hold 90FPS with everything maxed (only a mild overclock) Sweet spot is the 2080TI.

All that being said, the 1070 will still be a great experience, you'll just have to compromise with some graphic settings.

Cool, am up near Leeds/Bradford (am not Cmdr Thrust) I'll PM you this weekend. As mentioned the straps have broken on each side, I used masking tape to stick it back together!

Am also shopping for a new HMD, the Reverb looks good. Don't think anyone would want my kidneys, too much Japanese whiskey over the years ;-)

Cheers

i used a rift CV1 with gt 980 for many years. I have a 1080ti now and sure it is a "bit" better but the gtx980 is more than enough for ED in VR. (dont use supersampling, and use VR medium with a few settings pushed up a little)

if £200 is your limit a 2nd hand CV1 is your only choice. dont bother with any 3DOF headsets such as the pimax 4k, the rift DK2 is unsupported and whilst you can make it work it is as likely to put you off vr now as it is to get you hooked.
the vive i doubt you will get for £200 and besides imho it is not as good as the rift over all anyway.

so there you have it, 2nd hand rift CV1 or wait.

I've seen a few CV1 around the £175-£200 mark so the prices are coming down.

I'm on a 1060 6gb which should run it but my ancient MB & FX6300 (Yeah yeah laugh it up :p ) would probably bottleneck it into oblivion.

I play Elite with a GTX 1060 (6Gb) and a Vive. It's probably not peak performance, but the experience is just wonderful. You will never look at a T9 in the same way after flying on in VR. I can't play Elite on a monitor any more.

For me the biggest issue is not resolution, it is field of view. When those black edges vanish and you see the game world no mater where you move your eyes, I think the immersion will step up another level. I might be tempted to wait till wide field of vision headsets come out.

If you’re borrowing 777Driver’s CV1 you’re already sorted and will find out the answer to the biggest question - are you a VR convert? It seems those that are fall in to two brackets 1) Can afford and do get the best gear to enjoy it 2) Put up with what their budget will allow. Either way so long as you’re not running a total potato and you don’t suffer any sickness the VR Galaxy will likely suck you in forever.

Once you find a sweet spot in settings you’ll likely be surprised just how good it can look. Check out the VR sub forum for hints as to extra things you can do, if you’re happy to, in the config files to improve the background galaxy etc.

Hope you enjoy it.

I was going to go for a Oculus Rift S but the comments are pushing me towards a CV1, can someone just answer a quick question, with regards to the sensors? How much room will i need to be able to use it... Space is limited at the moment because we are due to move and have twin youngsters so I lost my games room a while back

Thats awesome I'm up near Sheffield so I could nip up on the 'Beast' (Motorbike) - Good luck with searching for your next new toy! - I have plenty of masking tape also so it's all good!

Many thanks!
