VR keeps delivering - 2 great exploration experiences

Just wanted to share a couple of great Rift experiences.

1 - I made a mistake whilst exploring. I took off the Rift whilst scooping fuel and started noshing my way through the contents of my fridge. Little did I realise that during my nom nom time, my ship had flown in to the sun and dropped out incurring minor damage to modules. So I put the Rift visor on and soon realised what had happened but jumping was a problem as I failed to pack heat sinks and engaging jump was taking the temp to smoke filled cockpit levels. Whilst trying to make up my mind what to do, the sun I was orbiting belched out a huge solar eruption right at me. Looking left and right, all I could see were scalding wisps of plasma enveloping the Asp. As usual with the Rift and screenshots, they rarely convey the magnitude of the experience. Needless to say, I hopped out of there sharpish and took the hit.

Note - the sun is behind me and I'm looking over my shoulder.

2 - At the end of the session, I managed to find an earth like planet. Proud of the discovery, I parked up for the night in close orbit. Next time I logged on, the planet was gone and I was left with the inky black nothingness of space. Confused, I looked around and as I did, a red crescent appeared in view. Slowly it grew until the rays of the distant sun crept round the edge of the planet. It was another one of thise jaw dropping Rift moments where you just sit and gawp at the screen.

The Rift really adds to the exploration experience.

Great screen shots Casper, I decided to have a little break from the bounty hunting and try exploring for the first time

Nothing to adventurous for the first time out as I was unsure what to expect and to be honest a little apprehensive leaving the safety of having a space port to dock and refuel.

Really enjoyed the trip it was only 1000 ly round trip 500 ly out to see a nebula, I forget the name and 500 ly back but I did see some incredible sites and also noticed how much smoother the game feels out of populated space, I could even super sample at 1.5

Not sure if it's intended or not, but when using the rift in solo or PG, a high res shot produces a screenie from a single lens. Quality seemed a little degraded though. Great shots above.

In the second set of pictures did I see white letters on your GUI?

Good spot Desert, I'm not a big fan of the green GUI, yes i understand it makes the text more eligible but i don't have a issue with it being white and can read it quite comfortably.

If you would like to try the GUI colour i can add it to this thread later when i finish work and get home ?

Thank you, but no. I really am only sortof running ED on my work laptop. Havent yet decided if I can budget a full PC, and then the OR. So thanks, but the text is legible for me on my 15" screen :) (I mean my flat, lifeless, no VR or headtracking laptop screen - big contrast to full on OR)

The first set of screenshots are awesome...they are perfectly spaced apart so that I can focus my eyes past them and see a true 3d image - the exact same method you have to use to see those hidden "3d" images on posters that they used to sell in the mall. Anyone remember those? They looked like static unless you could focus your eyes just right, then the image leaped out at you :)

Completely unrelated to exploring but had a really funny rift moment this evening. Bought another dropship at Founders .. kitted it our .. selected the option to launch. The platform slides me in to position and elevates me to the launch deck. As I rise up, it becomes obvious that someone had crossed the station authorities as a HUGE chunk of debris drifts inches from my cockpit!

That is funny I was sitting in station on the pad last week and huge pieces of ship were flying around all over the place and would actually pick up speed as they fly around. While laughing at it I noticed one coming right at me and braced for impact like it was real. It didn't do anything to my ship and just bounced off in another direction but got a kick out of it.

Just had another great VR experience to share. Sitting in an Eagle with a gimballed beam laser fitted in the top hard point. You're so close to the damn thing that when you let rip, it's such an amazing sight. A huge blazing arm of almost liquid like light splashes out right over your head.

It's not about the biggest ship for me at the moment. I'm playing for little quality experiences like this.

Apologies for spelling. Via phone. I'm at Legoland today :|

I love the stories of RIFT and ED.

One more ..

I'm in a Vulture fighting in a combat zone .. I home in on an enemy Cobra and ignore the fire coming in from the sides, expecting it to be Eagles. It turned out to be two Pythons; before I could turn it about, my shields dropped and there are sparks flying in the cockpit. Then as the smoke filled the cabin, I found myself blowing at it to clear my vision. I was so lost in the VR experience.

Yes, I get it. I felt it when I did the Rift Apollo demo and even though I knew it was a demo, with pretty base graphics, I still reached out to grab the floating pencil.
Ordering my 970 was step 1, so I have a foot in the water.
Thanks!

Scott
