VR makes Elite a whole new game.

I was on my way to Sag A before I decided to buy an Oculus Rift DK2, and decided to turn back after I got it. I made it to the Lagoon Nebula which is nice and managed to be the first to discover an earth like planet, which made me around 3 million credits. I sold my type 6 and bought a Viper to test out the DK2 with some dogfighting and it's just amazing. Turning your head to see a gas giant while fighting in the rings around it is something that can't be describes well enough. I highly recommend it. I made a video and edited out the second screen just because I thought it was all so cool. If anyone wants to view it the link is below. It's a bit lengthy though, about 25 minutes.

The truth is I love playing Elite more than anything else (for at least twelve months now) but I have to wonder if id have played even a tenth so long if I wasn't using VR?
... Probably not
I don't play other Rift games and I don't play other 2D games. When I was a kid I used to imagine flying my sidewinder for real. Now I pretty much get to! It's actually addictive. :)

Try the Eagle. Its even more impressive since you feel more tightly confined and all the screens are close to you. The Lakon's are most impressive too - I love being able to land them without having to use the visual guidance. You can literally park the things using only your spacial awareness.

Yeah. Elite is the hands down the best game to play using VR right now. The roller coaster demos are fun but flying a space ship through a 400 billion star system galaxy just astonishes you.

I was going to buy a Cobra at first but decided against it once I saw how narrow the view is. I'll definitely try the Eagle.

When I want to demo the rift to someone, I just launch elite, training mission in the asteroid belt (shooting at canisters), have him or her sit at my desk and put on the HMD... and smile at the "whoooaoaa!!!!" that follows 10 times out of 10. From ten to 77 years old it never failed.

Absolutely. Each time I fly a new ship it becomes my favourite ship ;-) I'm flying a Type 6 using a Rift at the moment and absolutely loving it. To me it feels like being in a cathedral, such amazing views as you pass planets. Landing at an outpost? Wow, simply wow. The outpost is *real*. It has size, structure - in a word... Reality.

Agreed with this.

Outposts are far more impressive to me than stations. Don't know why, but just flying up against one of them makes me feel like I'm staring up at a massive structure. Probably because stations are simply so huge that I have no RL point of reference- mind cannot accept their size. I'm sure if I saw an RL man-made structure that rivals the size of one of those stations I would feel the sense of size, but I haven't yet.

Went in to a conflict zone last night in a Dropship with side mounted beam turrets. The head tracking, scale and all round field of view made the combat experience second to none. Watching those beams tracking the targets and seeing the moment that one lost tracking / rolling the ship to get the next one on target. The beams looked huge. I'll never forget dancing with a Python, slicing it with the beams as it tried to evade and then lining it up for some cannon love once the shields had melted.

It's good on a monitor - but it's nothing compared to the VR experience. I really felt like I was part of a war.

I agree, I am now in an Eagle and I am enjoying the heck out of it with my Rift. I am actually considering sticking with a smaller ship now that I have the DK2, the game no longer is about buying the biggest ship I can find anymore. It's more about the flight experience. I think I can settle with staying in an Eagle, maxing out it's capability based on what I want to do and flying for the fun of it.

The great thing about the eagle is how much closer the panels are, making them so much easier to read. I upgraded to a viper yesterday which is great but much harder to read the text. It's only becuase I know the screens quite well now that I can get by. Better resolution hmd should hopefully fix this but if not, would be great to have a slider to configure how close the panels pop up.

Yes to all of this, I just have to learn to make more money in the game as it has been a long slow grind just to get my first 120K. I see this just getting better over time and looking forward to even clearer images.

It shouldn't take so long to make money. Check my sig for video guides to making bling.:)

Change the GUI colours and all is perfectly readable. Check the compendium in my sig/forum sticky for how

I usually would be part of the club that complains that elite lacks content and you can only trade, shoot or explore to grind for bigger ships.

Thanks to the DK2 these options are more then enough. Just flying around looking at stuff is to be honest. :D

What if There Were No Elite

I'm also the same. I'm only playing Elite at the moment, and I'm only playing it in VR. If the Elite Kickstarter had never happened I would have still got myself a VR helmet, because that had been a dream since I first heard about the concept. I would have been playing my VR games sighing to myself, and wishing someone would bring out a decent Elite clone.

i did try that once but didn't find it actually made that much difference for me. I might be a bit colour blind.
Might give it another shot though since I have all the other enhancements in place now.

EDIT: btw Dr Kaii, your guides have been very useful along with the others...have a +rep!

Raptoid, I was like you, struggling to make any cash until they changed bounty hunting. If you drop in to a res and start killing pirates...with the help of the NPC fed ships you can rack up some bounties pretty quickly especially if you get a kill warrant scanner and scan them before popping them off. I've made a few mil doing this in a couple of hours and best of all...it's super fun!

Don't bother telling me if this is too obvious :) but try turning up the brightness of your HUD. People keep telling me that the display is illegible without using the Green hack, but I've never had any hassle reading it even with the standard amber colour.

I can read it ok, it's just not as clear as when the panel is up close like in the Eagle.

Using sweetfx to do some sharpening and Nvidia DSR really helps a lot.
