VR newbie - advice required please

Thanks for the post TorTorden you saved me a bundle I was looking at the Vive not that there is anything wrong with the Rift I have it is just being used when I want it too much lately.

Not necessarily. Everybody has different eyes and vision issues. An example of why I prefer glasses is that heat from the Rift panels has a tendency to dry out the contact lenses. Also depending on the type of lenses daily, weekly, monthly or such the shape of the lenses change over time as they are of various thicknesses. Your eye moisture can also affect things like fogging. Many factors can affect this so I am inclined not to offer up a blanket conclusion. YMMV is always a good disclaimer.

Nope, my post simply refers to the "prescription" and is intended to convey the idea that like prescriptions should produce like results. It does not refer to individual experiences which may differ in some circumstances, or YMMV (your mileage may vary) as you suggest.

So what new HMD's are on the horizon and am I better waiting for another 6 -12 months? My current setup is pretty sweet, I have an ultra-wide Predator monitor and a TrackIR/Trackclip Pro but as good as it is it's not going to beat the full immersion of VR. I just got back from Florence in Italy celebrating my 50th and had a VR experience there in the DaVinci museum - it was pretty cool (if a little grainy) so I can only imagine what you guys get to see playing ED in VR :)

I ran a similar setup with three 27 inch monitors in surround and track IR and while it was a pretty cool setup for ED the rift blows that away. VR is much more immersive and the sense of scale blows me away still. I find the Rift very comfortable and I used it for a while with glasses and it wasn't bad but I ordered some lenses from VR labs (https://vr-lens-lab.com/) and i prefer that setup a lot more. Way easier to take the rift on and off with the lenses. If I were buying lenses again I would consider https://widmovr.com/ . A little cheaper and to me the mounting mechanism looks better. I think the current prices of the rift makes it a easy decision for Elite. I got mine about a year ago and I have not played elite outside of VR since.

I have contacted VR Labs with my full prescription as they asked for it so they could tell me whether they could cater for my prescription - not herd anything back from them which doesn't really bode well. I might just buy the inserts and see if my optician can make the lenses.

The standing advice is to try and see if one can not get to try a couple of different devices before buying, so that you can see which feels more comfortable, and looks better to you, but for glasses wearers this may be doubly warranted, because a small number of people can use one or the other without glasses -- it depends on the nature of one's vision deficiency, and the virtual focal lenght of the HMD in question.

As for modifying one's HMD, this is something I have done myself; Shimmed the lenses up a bit, for +1.5 diopters. This worked great, although it did indeed result in some extra distortion (albeit significantly less than what I'd get out of any glasses worn in the headset). The question is, though: How confident are you feeling about going warranty.breaking DIY on your brand new multi-hundred dollar toy? :7

a bit late to the party ...

So my question is - do I just need the headset to play ED in VR or do I need the full kit?

what do you mean, full kit? a couple of sensors, a headset and you're good to go. vr controllers are pertty useless in elite anyway.
(dunno about the vive, but for the rift even one single sensor is perfectly fine for elite)

however this struck me:

As a spectacle wearer I am leaning towards the VIVE as everything I have read says it's much more comfortable for us '4-eyes' than the Rift.

where did you read that? i wear glasses myself and get along with the rift just fine. i guess it depends on their size (and your head's), so ideally you should test first, but i'd say the same is true for both the vive and the rift.

my new progressive glasses could technically fit but there would be a chance to break them with prolonged use, specially while putting the headset on/off. i also found out progressive glasses are no good at all for vr since you are locked to a single viewing angle, and they interfere with the positional focus.

my old non-progressive glasses otoh fit very well, no problem whatsoever and luckily i can see perfectly with them in the fish tank, at any distance and angle.

There are quite a number of sites that mention the comfort level of the Vive is better than the rift for glasses wearers - I can only take this at face value seeing as I own neither, but from what others on here have said, the Vive is the poorer choice for playing ED anyway.

As to wearing varifocles, like you say, complete none starter because they work by moving your head in relation to what you are looking at and you can't do that with an hmd.

VR labs have come back to me now - gonna be 128 Euro for the pair plus another 20 for the blueguard coating.

Rift is down to £349 on Amazon (at least while Prime day lasts). Dithering over whether to pull the trigger and see how I get on with my specs but at least its good to know I can get lenses made if I need them.
