VR noob setup

I FINALLY got a CV1 unit. Set it up according to the instructions and played around with the demos before going into Elite.

While I eventually got the game to display on my headset (Holy Moly, is this game BIG) I have my cockpit seat 3 feet behind my desk chair that I sit in to play Elite. Now the instructions had me stand in the middle of my "play" area so I am wondering if that is why when I enter the cockpit my "pilot" is sitting in his chair 3 feet behind me and 2 feet above me.

Is their a way to "recenter" myself into the chair? If this a matter of running setup again, fine.

I am wondering if setting the Rift for "chair" height, will this effect the standing up games?

Not too sure on the Rift but I play on the Vive and there is an option to re-centre on the first VR menu page (where you are in the hanger with a scarab and ship). I would imagine that that option is there for either headset. Also, you can re-centre your headset through steam and can port your copy of Elite to steam at no cost if you need to. Good luck, Elite is awesome in VR!

If you were standing when you set up your Rift, then you should be good to go.

You can reset the view in ED to adjust it to the view from the chair. I'm not sure if there's a default binding, but if there is it's F12 (as suggested above). If nothing happens by pressing that, go into Options > Graphics and look for the reset (HMD?) view setting. I'm sorry, but I'm not able to be in game at the moment so I really cannot remember exactly where it is.

OP. Do you use Voiceattack? I never felt the need for it with mouse & keyboard, but it's fantastic with VR. I bound Reset HMD in Elite options to ` key (next to no. 1) and set-up a VA command "centre" to re-centre my view. Found it much better than fumbling around for the F12 key.

I did the same.

I have not used Voiceattack. However, considering that it is a bit clumsy trying to hit the F12 key at time, yes, I will be setting that up.

If you don't use VoiceAttack yet, then this may also be a handy tip.

Navigating the map is a little trying in VR. What I do is use Notepad to collect all my thoughts and current goals. I copy the name of the system where I'm travelling, and then I have ctrl-V set up as a voice command to paste it into the System Find of the Galaxy Map

I don't use voiceAttack, but to use the Map in VR, I configured the Xbox controller to be able to do everything I did with the mouse.

You need to get used to it, but it's really easy and now I use it in VR for the map and for the different station menus ones docked...

The "body" in the seat is too small, I feel, so it makes the spacing from my viewpoint to the hands on the controls look wrong.
I get around this by scrunching down in my seat, hitting F12 to recenter, then sitting back up.
It moves my "eyes" up about 6" and my real hands line up better with the ones I see on the controls.
It would be nice to be able to adjust the scale of the pilot in the cockpit.

If the scale is wrong then your IPD is probably wrong.

Is there any reason why sound is not coming out of the Oculus Rift headset? I have checked the HMD/headphones option in the menu but I still am getting nothing from the Rift. Sound is still playing from the speakers in game. Outside of Elite, sound plays through the rift headset like it should.

I have been so impressed with the visuals, I hadn't really thought much about the sound til now.

Even with that little snag, I get it when people say they won't go back to playing with a monitor.

WOW. Just WOW! [smile]

Wlcome to the world of VR and especially to Elite VR, which is still the best VR experience, when it comes to long term fun and impressive visuals.

To solve your problem, you might want to check the windows settings and make sure, that the Rift is set as main audio device and as standard communications device (to use the mike). I hope this helps.

Sound can be finicky depending on how many audio devices you have, and there are a few different ways to set it up. For me, in Oculus settings I have the default sound device set to "Windows Default" then I just select which device I want to output sound by clicking the sound icon in the taskbar. So it might be worth checking that your output is set to the Rift while in Elite.

Prior to using my own headphones, I had to toggle between speakers and rift in Windows "Playback devices".

Also, try sound mirroring. In the Oculus client, select Devices then Rift, and turn on "Mirror VR audio" - that might do the trick.

Tried turning on Mirror VR audio with no luck. :(

I suppose it isn't the end of the world to just use my existing headphones. It what I use primarily anyway when playing Elite so the Wife doesn't keep yelling at me to "TURN IT DOWN!!" when playing on the monitor. :p

Also noticed a GREAT sale in the Oculus store for Elite Dangerous: Commander Deluxe edition. I have toyed with the idea of getting another account anyway so this might be the time to jump on it. Along the lines of adding an account through the Oculus store I have 2 questions:

1. Is the Oculus Elite purchase locked to only being playable through the Oculus Rift? IE: No more using a regular monitor for that account?

2. Will I still be able to play my existing account through the Oculus Rift?

Wouldn't it be funny if I am able to get sound played through the Rift on the Oculus account and still have sound locked to the desktop account through the windows speakers..... :p

Did you try the other suggestions in this thread, aside from mirroring, namely selecting the Rift headphones in Windows sound?

You can use your monitor with the Oculus version of the game, Dr. Kaii's profiler tool can help with that. And you should be able to change between accounts as well once the launcher opens.

I have not tried doing the manual selection in Windows sound. I am sure it would work (Since sound works through the rift for everything else) but am hoping to have it automatically work.

Thanks for the tip on the profiler! I have downloaded and installed it, just haven't dug too deep into it yet.

Riktar, also be sure to download Oculus Tray Tool and run that, if you haven't yet. It's a tool that runs in the system tray, which tweaks and refines Oculus for you. It is invaluable. In regard to your sound issues, you can have Tray Tool automatically shift your sound settings when you go in and out of Oculus, for both input and output. It also controls your supersampling very well, and has a number of other very useful functions. And, yay, it is free!

As mentioned in this thread, do look into Voice Attack as well! It's a game changer (literally...).

Happy flying!
