VR Passenger Mode

Not sure if this is already available, as I am still waiting for Oculus Rift and Vive to be a simple purchase, but it would be good if there was a passenger VR mode.

ie. a mode where you can fly in 2D on a screen while someone else can wear the headset and experience the 3D immersion without being able to fly.

I was just wondering the same because I just purchased my Vive (simple purchase btw)

How do I show elite to friends and family?

I already do this - quite regularly in fact, using my DK2 (and plan to do the same with my CV1 when it arrives in May).

I position a chair for my 'VR passenger' out of the way of my desk, pc monitor and HOTAS and position the Oculus IR camera to suit the chair. I'm only talking a couple of feet away from my desk. I hit F12 to center up the HMD for the person in the chair and I fly the ship from my desk whilst using the pc monitor. I very occasionally have to ask the person in the chair to 'look left or right' if I need to see any of the control panels but other than that - works well. Even when the passenger looks around I can see all my main flight info (radar, shields, fuel etc) as field of view of mirrored image on monitor is good. I have shown the kids and their mates some piracy action, docking and un-docking, SC, FSD jumps, debug camera views of the galaxy - inclu. galaxy map and even took the missus on a trip from high orbit down to the surface of a rocky body for some canyon runs and SRV action. I dont recommend any HIREZ/HAZ RES action tho - as things can turn nasty very quickly (your choice of course!).

this method works well for showing 'passengers' ED in VR whilst 'in-game' with me flying my ship in normal 2D.

My big plan would be to have my DK2 on one pc and have my CV1 on a 'new' pc - so me and my son (or one of my mates) can play in VR together crewing the same ship (multicrew) - all in VR

Yes can also confirm Vive opens window on desktop which shows you what VR head set looking at.

But still think would be better to class VR headset as second monitor. Not sure why VR does it this way.

Hmm I think you've just given me a reason to upgrade my 2nd PC CMDR and my Xbox CMDR to Horizons when multi-crew comes out and get the whole family flying a ship :) This game is getting expensive...

That must be tricky at the moment though, as I presume you see a distorted double screen on the monitor, with a view that constantly shifts as your passenger looks around.

I was hoping for a normal 2D screen view, with standard controls, ie. as if you were playing without VR at all, so that the passenger can still experience the full VR view without menus etc.

This is what I did on the DK2: buy a docking computer and go outside of a large space station facing away from the station. Ask for docking permission and keep your throttle just above zero. Let your friend/spouce/victim get comfy in the headset and then set throttle to zero. Auto-docking will commence and the ship will turn to reveal the massive scale of ED accompanied by Strauss' "An der schönen blauen Donau", very 2001

Play around a bit on your own to find a good starting point. I started from next/slightly in front of a big ringed station which is pretty awesome.

I've also flown people around like Blastard has. It's a bit tricky but it can be done if kept simple. And if they are familiar with a joystick you can of course throw them in a tutorial.

Yes - exactly CMDR. This has been my plan since ordering my CV1. I know I'll have a mate round on a Fri nite for a beer so we can have a blast in 3D in the same ship (or in separate ships - winged up)

Not really CMDR. The image on the pc screen is a single image (albeit slightly distorted like you get when FOV is high). The FOV in the rift is narrower than I see on the pc screen. I can easily see my main displays (radar, heat, distributor, fuel) even if the passenger looks around by 30 degrees or so with the HMD. Only landings are tricky coz its difficult to judge distance. I use instruments a lot when things get tricky. I usually ask the passenger to look at the panel I need (adds to their immersion). Same issues with asteroid fields - so you need to take care.

Otherwise - it works really well. So far my passengers include; missus, my 2 kids (both early 20's), my mum (70 last month), the kids next door, loads of nieces and nephews, some of my mates including one on a visit from Oz! - They loved it when I chucked them outside the ship using the debug cam. You ought to give it a go.
