VR problems

My Setup
Oculus Rift S
ThrustMaster 16000M ( Joy and Throttle )
Steam

While playing the game every now and then I get a beep, like one you get when you unplug a USB device, then the screen goes blank, in the VR but the screen on the monitor still displays the game but it is frozen. After about 30 seconds I get control in the game on the monitor but the VR stays blank. So using the monitor I exit the game back to Steam. Restart the game in VR and all is ok. Some days this does not happen at all and some days it happens four or more times. The Refresh Rate and Frame Rate Limit are at 60 HZ so that is not the problem. Anyone have any ideas ?

Could this be a USB problem? First thing I’d do is try different USB3 ports to see if the problem continues, and also check the Device Manager isn’t messing with things - Device Manager/Universal Serial Bus controllers, right click on each device and check the Power Management tab, “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” shouldn’t be ticked.

As Arioch says it's possibly USB power problem, check device manager.

Also, from the SteamVR window (which I'm confused about that because you're using a Rift S? but hey) open the menu, click Develper then Developer Settings, scroll down to a "Disable Power Management" setting and select this.

Finally, I bought a USB PCI card I could power directly from the power supply and put the headset's USB through that. I had a similar problem to you and this solved it.
For whatever reason I suspect my motherboard wasn't able to consistently supply enough power through its own usb ports.

Does sound like a USB issue, the headset not sending tracking data through.
Another option, if possible, remove any other non-essential device plugged in to USB in case power is an issue

Not sure about the 60Hz though? Is that your monitor because the RiftS is 80Hz

Thanks for the reply. I did check the device manager and made those changes but I have not tried a different USB 3 port. I will try it, I have a few.

I had an issue with my Rift S where a certain USB slot would cause the computer to restart a few seconds after I shut it down if the headset was plugged into it - even though I thoroughly checked all “wake” settings etc.

Sometimes it’s just a case of trying different ports or as others have said (and what I eventually did), get a powered USB card for your computer. Hope it works out for you 🙂

Tried another USB 3 port and still the same problem. Today in four hours of play it did it twice. Verified the USB ports again and they are set to not turn off. Strange that it only effects Elite. As soon as I get back to Steam and re-start the problem is gone. Will keep on looking into it.

Look into Developer Settings and could not find it. Will search for this later, thanks.

Basically I built the PC to play games There is nothing attached to it other than to play Steam games. I have another computer for other things. The game only allows me to choose 60 or 90 HZ. No option for 80.

@Sir*Vivor To get my Rift S to work consistently I had to connect it to a USB3 hub with a dedicated power supply (wall wart). I tried the USB3 ports on my computer and 2-3 different brands of other USB cards hooked directly to the computer's power supply and none of those solved the problem. THe powered USB hub hanging off the USB port looks stoopid but works like a charm. :)

Edit - when disconnects happened to me I would get a beep, then static noise, and a disconnect where I could see it on the pancake but not the HMD.

The frequency setting should only affect your flatscreen monitor for the game mirror - same as setting the game resolution to something like 640x480, it doesn’t alter your HMD view.

As below, left is the top of the settings and scroll down to see right. If you're disabling through device manager anyway it should do the same thing:

You may want to go through the process this guy used to fix his. Follow what he does in the Oculus software. Is there any reason you have to start the game in Steam?

Thanks. I will look at other possibilities first before going out to buy hardware. I bought my Rift S about a year ago and up to about one month ago had no problems and no hardware changes in that time . If it was a power problem it would of showed up earlier. I am getting a "Unhandled Exception" error when starting the EDLaunch.exe program.
Here is a screen shot.

This to is intermittent and happens most times I launch the game from Steam. I usually just close down the Launcher and then play the game. Thanks for the reply.

Have you tried not using Steam?
