VR Wings Deep Space Survey

VR Space Men,

We have quite a contingent now. Let's do something special. My first proposal is to do a deep space survey. We should do more in the future but I think we should start by heading to HIP 98674 - a system with 3 neutron stars. I haven't been and I bet it's already been explored but not only is it extremely interesting, it's also only 1000ly away. We could get there in a few hours.

I am up for proposals of a different destination. We should see at least one nebula along the way, which might take us a bit further out.

Ok entries are now pretty much complete. You can still join but the later you do the less say you'll have on the itinerary. Here's a list of everyone who's on board. The rest of this thread is to discuss a date and a destination.

I suggest the EU guys and NA guys group up. Not to avoid international mingling, but simply because the times will work out better.

Could everybody please post the following information asap:
1. How soon you'll be able to get an Asp up to grade? Please watch this video to see what you'll need. Try to copy the loadout exactly so we all have the same jump range.
2. When is an ideal date/time for you to go. Also include dates/times you definitely can't go. State your time zone or just convert to GMT for easy coordination. GMT has just moved clocks forward 1 hour.
3. A suggestion of where to go/something you'd like to see. Keep it to under 2000ly. Can also say you don't mind.
4. How long a session you can manage between breaks. How many breaks you think you'll need and for how long. Also mention any unexpected complications like the potential for family to need to take you away etc.

Could you also add everyone listed to your friends list and introduce yourselves over the next week or two. Try and decide who you want to wing up with. If you don't care then I guess I will just group people myself ;) I will try to base it on when's the best times for you all and how many breaks you'll need etc.

Once we've got that, we can decide who is wing leader in terms of plotting course etc. We will then decide where to go and when.

The plan will be for the 3 wings to head out on separate courses, be in touch along the way and group up upon arrival. I expect vastly different arrival times so we might all meet up the next day. If people can't make it all the way or have to drop out unexpectedly, no problem. It's bound to happen to some of us.

Ok that's a lot of things to think about! Let's see where we are all at a week from today and we can work on finalising.

Thanks space men!

Dr. Kaii

Destination Proposals:
-HIP 98674 (Dr. Kaii)

How:
We should break into wings of 4 grouping based on jump distance and region. Each wing can then make its own journey there, and we can share an Indi Bourbon when we get there. Once there we can decide if we want to go anywhere else. EU and NA will go separately if we have enough response from both. Otherwise the lesser will go based on the times of the larger (sorry!)

Requirements:
-An Asp, with A5 Thrusters, a good fuel scoop (will agree which one is reasonable), an Advanced Discovery Scanner, a Detailed Surface scanner, and everything else as light as possible
-A mic
-A full day (with ample rl breaks ;)) to be agreed on. Most likely a Sunday late in April.
-Something entertaining for the journey. Anything, you name it - riddles, your life story, jokes, music, facts about space, celebrity impressions - I don't care

Recommended:
-Heat sink launcher
-Auto Field-Maintenance Unit

When:
We will set a date based on how long all those interested can reasonably get hold of the aforementioned ship and loadout. You'll need about 15m (including insurance) to get it. I.e, no rush! Late April or even May.

Extras:
-If anyone has any video recording software, which works with VR, let me know. Recording the journey for posterity would be a fine thing to do.
EDIT: I've already figured out how to do this with the Oculus Rift Second window and it works pretty darned well. Only issue is I can't use SweetFX with it :( One person from each wing should set this up and we can share on youtube.

If anyone needs advice about how to get money quicker, please ask. There are plenty of ways. If you have a Cobra with about 40T cargo, you can get it all in about 10 hours of play, doing rare trading.

A few others (I'm sure) and I would be willing to front the money for the Cobra. Mention below if you'd be happy to contribute (we'd achieve this by purchasing commodities and ejecting them for you to sell).

So stick your name down and we will look at the results around the weekend, and delay if necessary, and come up with a plan.

If you put your name down, subscribe to the thread and check back next week.

Thanks commanders.

It's much more likely to take around 6 hours. Just sayin' ^^

And I'm sure we'll be able to take breaks.

Good idea, sadly i won't be able to come, my Fer-de-lance got crappy jump range and i can't afford an Asp right now :x

Up to you atlas but there's no rush. I'm deliberately setting a distant date (month or 2) so people can get the ship in no rush.

You are one of the biggest stars in VR ED. I want you on board, what do you say?:D

My maximum is two hours due to toddlers and demanding work. These things have a higher priority. I love playing this game though and have loved Elite since I played Frontier: Elite II. Playing in VR is a dream come true and I have invested heavily in hardware for it so I keep playing, just not able to do 6 hours and mostly when I find an half hour on evenings and max two in weekends. I am even building a sim pit with four bass shakers for extra immersion, but that also takes time, almost finished though!

Anyway, I'm totally up for quick team RES bounty hunting sessions as that fits my time the best. Maybe we could think up some ad-hoc scheduling system to align with other VR players.

I'm currently in the HIP 100072 system. It has an outpost with repairs with a RES within 1LS. That fits my purposes and schedule perfectly.

Yep, of course they are more important. I'd say I feel sorry for you but I don't. You are very blessed :)

 A big low temp star ^^

CMDR Cudaspawn here,
will have to save and get the ship, but if im able to get the day off from work I would love to go :)

I'm up for that dude, have an explorer Conda that I mainly use for stuff like this. Myself and cmdr elooder are planning a trip in two Asp's to Mintaka. plan is to go either this weekend or next.

Ok got you both down. Flex, I'll happily come with you when you go, please invite. And I will let you know when we set a date for this too.

Put my name, but no promises as I am just returning from an exploration trip and still flying a cobra.

Where did you go? How far did you get in a Cobra? What did you seeee!

Didn't go that far, but I took a rather zig zag path to the Musca dark region/Coalsack Nebula, placing route points to B stars. Also followed little tiny puffs of cloud that are usually stars starting with HIP, and some systems were just made out of 12-14 stars. Got few discoveries of my own, hopefully I will be able to bring them first. A one black hole, few water worlds and a tons of stars and metal planets.

Right now I am at the nebula and planing a different route on my way home.

I'm game..I love explorering. just got back from a pretty good journey. Betelgeuse was my last stop on the way back to civilization. I've been to the witch head nebula, orion, horse head and the flame. wiki "largest stars in milkyway" and type the names into your nav. not all were there but i found quite a few.

Commanders after my own heart!

Let me know how much you earn! Sounds like you saw some pretty awesome stuff.

I'd love to go to the horsehead nebula and betelgeuse. I'm going to go to the latter very soon with someone. I'm totally down with your style of play.

You'd both be interested in the "exploration gems" thread in my sig :)

CMDR Dark Arbiter, reporting for duty.

Gotta work for that ship, but looks like there's gonna be plenty of time. I'm NA, on Central Time, for whatever that's worth.

I'll go too if there's room.

[EDIT] I wish there were tools/mechanic/features to encourage wing exploration.
