I find using the keyboard with my Rift all but impossible. For flight, I use an old Cyborg 3D 12-button joystick (which I plan to swap for a decent HOTAS system this Christmas......). For all other functions that I would be normally using the keyboard for, with the exception of actual typing, I highly, highly recommend Voice Attack. It's been mentioned in this thread already, but if you're not familiar, it's a fairly robust voice command app. You can customize it to your heart's content. The free version allows you to create a single profile with up to 20 commands (which is actually enough for ED), but after I demoed that for a short while I shelled out the $10 for the full version, and it is so worth it. I use voice commands for everything from re-centering the HUD, deploying landing gear and hardpoints, cycling through hardpoints, shifting power, FSD, ship lights, targeting, exiting the game, going to the galaxy/system map, issuing orders to my fighter escort, a gazillion other things. You can also use it to record macros. If you're not aware, as I wasn't, your Rift has a built-in mic, so that's not an issue. I've also set it up to give me voice feedback for some commands. Additionally, you can change the focus of your commands to other things running on your computer, so I'm also using it to control iTunes while I'm playing ED. The only thing that kind of sucks is that you're still stuck with the keyboard for typing. So text comms with other cmdrs and doing searches in the galaxy map are a pain. But beyond that, voice attack is a game changer. I can't imagine ED in VR without it. Keyboards are soooo old school.....
