Ships Vulture cheapest loadout

What is the least amount of CR you need to start off with a decent Vulture, and have enough left over for insurance? I have around 10 million CR, so I can get the ship, I just don't want to be left penniless or with a barely functional piece of floating tin!

Without discounts this is a workable build for RES and Nav point PVE, the price could be reduced further still with a smaller FSD if you don't need the range, it's worth putting money into the power dist so you wont have to upgrade it later.

or a combat focused Viper for CZ's, RES and general Pew Pew ;) great fun this one!

Well, he will not have fun in a vulture with two class 2 lasers i think... Add the KWS (I really dont like them), and it will take aged to take down anything...

It'll take a little longer to drop shields with class 2's but you'll be able to fire them continuously with a large power dist and with the Vultures agility it's easy to keep them on target, anyway a full fat Vulture gets a little boring after a while ;), this adds a bit of risk and excitement in a similar way to using a Viper for the same targets.

Cheap and combat ship should not be mentioned in the same sentence...much less the same breath. It would be better to A fit a viper until you could afford to at least B fit a Vulture. A class shields, distributor, FSD (if you plan on ever attempting to go anywhere) and power plant are a must and those are not cheap on the Vulture.

Agreed a 15 - 20 mil Vulture is a much more capable ship but the OP has only 10 mil to spend ATM (personally I'd stick with a Viper as it's a lot cheaper to replace), I've used the cheap and cheerful Vulture at RES's and it works fine, takes a little longer to drop shields and you need to know when to bug out but it's a lot of fun to fly.

..with OPs budget, I'd go for a buffed Diamondback S..it is a fantastic ship & will be more deadly than a poor man's vulture and more fun than a viper. I had a great PvP with one, in my multi-purpose Vulture 'lite'..ie orig lightweight hull, D rated shields, 22 tn cargo, no SCB. 20-25m will get you a maxed out vulture, good for SSS, conflict zones, military strikes, security ops, crime sweeps and assassination missions.

Thanks for all the answers, I see that I still need to save up for a bit before I make the switch. I like the Diamondback Scout idea! I have a decently spec Cobra at the moment, it is a brilliant multi purpose ship as you all know, but I kind of have the craving for a new ship. Would it be much of a downgrade? Should I just stick with the Cobra until I can afford a proper Vulture?

Hmm I disagree with the above, you can fit a very capable Vulture for around 10 mil. You'll want more for insurance, though. Get this in a discounted system and this costs only a tad over 10 million. I found that shield boosters with C class shields match the shield strength of A shields for the same amount of power. If you want another free utility mount, you can later swap a booster for A shields when you have enough money. C thrusters are more than enough probably, considering other things that a Vulture could spend power on. With correct power management (turn off cargo scoop, FSD, and fuel scoop in combat) it pushes 15.59 out of 15.60 MW.

I think you would be better off with a DB Scout or a Courier (latter even better, if you have the ranking or a PP ranking with Empire). To build a proficient Vulture, you need at least 15 million. Trust me, I made the mistake months ago buying the Vulture upgraded from a Viper with 10 million, and it was direly underpowered in every respect.

With a DBS or a Courier, you can spend 5 to 10 million respectively for an A class ship, and definitely mull out millions with each run in an RES. The DBS is quite a fun ship. Despite having an FDL and a Clipper fully loaded out, I tend to keep a DS to wing with my son in RES instances, and it truly is a very proficient ship. If you are a capable commander when it comes to combat and dog-fighting, with a DS you can easily take down a Clipper or a Python in PvE RES instance without either ship getting a shot off at you with proper positioning.

I would wait until you have the requisite 15 million and then invest into a Vulture, just make sure you have sufficient funds for the insurance in case something goes, well, really wrong.

Let me know if you need help with the DS or Courier buildouts and I will be happy to offer a few.

I agree 100% - the Vulture is a great ship, but you need to have it properly equipped to get the most out of it.

Remember the Vulture is not a "multi-purpose" ship, its sole use is to kill other ships, so you cannot afford to compromise on critical components. You cant build it like an Asp and generate credits from trading, exploration or light combat.

It needs to be combat capable from the start which means you really need enough credits for high spec modules and insurance - at least enough to cover at least 3 ship losses.

Also dont forget that you will be cruising around in a ship that says "I am a fighter", so other players may want to see how well you can fight!

As per the above post, consider a cheaper ship that you can easily afford to fit out (the DBS sounds fun) and get to work earning credits.
