Vulture to the core?

Hi everyone,

just asking - how crazy would it be to take a Vulture to the core? I've been flying one during the last few days - and compared to the Asp, that beast simply handles better and has a much nicer cockpit. What worries me a bit is that the jump range is even worse than a Sidey (ok, still better than an Orca), so would crossing the Sagittarius Gap pose any problems? After that, jump range probably won't matter much (at least from my impression of the map).

Yes, I'd need twice as many jumps as with my Asp, and I couldn't take the sacrificial mug and only one SRV (or two SRVs and the smaller AFMU - at the cost of 0.2 ly jump range). But if a Python can make it on DW, an Vulture should be able to get to the core.

No fuel scoop? As a fuel rat, I'll come and save you if you want... like 4 jumps outside the bubble :p

Updated version, no AFMU since I personally never needed one on my SagA trip. Also slightly better junp range by lowering some modules. You could also run a 1D power distributor for about .3 ly extra, but that's up to you. No shield booster, heat sinks, removed the lasers and use only a small one (even there, might not ever need it).

A Vulture (with fuel scoop presumably) was taken to the core in April last year.

 ... I shouldn't do a build just before going to bed....

Now I know why I had the feeling that I forgot something. CMDR Sapporo - you probably wouldn't even have had to leave the bubble.

Ok, scale down the guns (but the small lasers just look ridiculous on those mounts...), 5A scoop and 4C bi-weaves, no AFMU. That looks better. Perhaps add a Heatsink - but I'd probably forget to use it if it ever comes to that. I could get half a lightyear more by skipping the guns (you're probably right about not needing them), but a Vulture without guns just doesn't feel right.

Your original build wouldn't work for exploration, here is what id suggest if you want to explore in a vulture:

Light, no weapons, no heat sinks, D rated for maximum range. Explored lots never used weapons or heat sinks but that's personal pref. Your LY range will only be 21LY even with everything stripped down and D rated.

No such thing as a ship you cant explore in CMDR but combat vessels do suffer when it comes to range. On a positive note CMDR Frawd Digger just travelled 65KLY in a Sidewinder, his exploits are worth reading for inspiration.

Good luck CMDR, I encourage you to go for it, if you need any advice just ask.

Arm gaps weren't an insurmountable issue with 18,5 ly Federal Corvette. You might need to stay no more than several hundred ly's away from the galactic plane to be able to navigate the gaps. The route will be zigzaggy, though and will result into inflated number of jumps. Pay attention to your loadout in order to get sufficient jump range.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions - especially those that suggested I should take a fuel scoop. I think I'll try it with a couple of class 2 lasers - that'd be 1.5 ly less than Cdr Vorheez's optimized build, less than 10%, and give me 20 ly on fumes.

And, especially to Cdr Vorheez (and if I remember that image from your Avatar correctly...): Perry Rhodan never went unarmed ;)

Go for it I say! It's definitely a handsome ship the Vulture, and when you're out in the black for ever and ever and ever, a bit of mean-looking aesthetics can go a long way.

Not that I'm saying my Asp is ugly - I love the thing myself, but when I showed a friend some video of my exploration he said "What's that white brick thing you're flying?"
So if you like a bit of glam with your exploration, why not give your Vulture a go? :D

Both Cmdrs Sapporo & Voorheez have posted viable Explo-Vulture builds there - but remember to take care crossing the gaps between the spiral arms. In the pre-jumponium days, that might've hobbled your quest, but with the prospect of getting a 40ly boosted jump in a Vulture, you should be fine, provided you keep grabbing materials when you need 'em :)
