Wacky 'Off the wall' thought: OpenXR + Aspheric Lens Inserts?

Two thoughts rubbing together, having spent some time with playing vrperf, openxr and opencomposite

I vaguely recall that VR images are rendered, deliberately distorted on the panels, in order to offset distortion effects from the fresnel lenses we're all using except for those with a Varjo or XTAL.

I wonder if it's possible to apply 'corrections' in OpenXR to render the image for an Aspheric lens design instead.

Whilst there are many lens manufacturers out there, I would imagine the fiddly bit is dimensioning the lenses correctly for different headsets ( and getting them to fit ).

Could we all have aspheric lenses with our ordinary headsets and the wide clear displays that the Varjo/XTAL users are forking out thousands for?

I did have a VERY quick gander at the OpenXR SDK but nothing jumped out at me immediately to support this. Still, if there's a means...

VR images are deliberately rendered with barrel distortion which is why you need to render a scene 40% larger than the flat native resolution.

This is also true I believe for aspheric lenses, the problem we have currently is whilst aspheric lenses give a clearer view they introduce other problems like the size needed to achieve the same results as Fresnel and chromatic aberration as you approach the edges due to the light being split into its component colours. You basically exchange a clearer view for a smaller FoV a bit like the HP G2 vs. VP2 & Index.

What we need is a new lens design imho, there is talk of Valve investing in this and Meta buying up companies....

I think I read somewhere the new Pimax will use a compound lens system with aspheric for the central area and Fresnel for the edges and peripheral vision.
