Wait for next generation PC VR or wait for ED VR for the PS4 Pro ?.

I'm at a crossroads, I want to play ED in VR as I think that this game is perfect for VR. Will ED VR be coming to the PS4 Pro or do I wait for the next generation PC VR (8K), is 8K even necessary ?. wireless or wired is not a concern.

I've no experience with VR.

P.S. has anyone tried ED in Sony's VR theater mode ?.

The ps4. pro or regular will never get elite in vr.
Heck it can't even maintain steady 30fps in 1080p for most games.

It's simply so underpowered.
Even the xbx one x or will at best be considered as a middling gaming PC and thats the bar for the next ps5 as well.

The problem with tech is you are always waiting for the next best thing. I was originally going to wait for second gen VR before jumping in but last July when the Rift dropped to $400 I decided to give it a go. I have absolutely no regrets as ED is great in VR in my opinion. I haven't played ED outside of VR since I got my rift and I really don't think I would still be playing Elite as much today if it wasn't for VR. I don't think Elite will ever support PS4 VR so its really buy now or wait for something like the Pimax 8k. I just saw that the Pimax has been delayed and won't ship in Jan as originally announce so who knows how long you will have to wait.

I was going to wait until I got a better GPU, but then the price dropped to $345... You can wait, or you can jump in now and enjoy the game so much more. Fun now or fun later... That's the question!

Let me tell you a true story (and it is, I feel, relevant). Somebody I know wanted to build himself a new PC. He knew what he wanted it to do. He had a reasonable PC already, but it was not capable of playing current games. He started looking at the performances of the various peripherals, and then he started looking at what was being developed. He decided to wait until the next generation of graphics card came out. Then, when the graphics card was launched he saw that there was a new sound card being developed. The long and short of the story is that, 18 months later, he STILL hadn't built his powerful PC (while I had had 18 months more enjoyment!).

totall guess but I think Sony would need to allow the PS4 pro to be able to have features than the vanilla does not have to get ED in VR (ie i reckon a pro COULD do it, but i doubt the core machine could).

the pimax 8k is expensive and will need a beast of a machine to run it properly. with the rift now being 350 quid imo there has never been a better time to board the VR hype train (assuming you have a pc for the rift, but if not you can forget running the pimax 8k)

VR is a game changer, esp for elite imo. i am never going back to flat gaming in ed. over 1500hrs in ED since mid 2014 ALL in VR.

Go for it. No reason to wait for 8k since even the best GPUs ain't fast enough for ultra settings with the Vive and its 4k. I'm loving it even though my GTX 9700 is the bare minimum. It's more about scale and free movement then having the best resolution.

When I start playing and paying for VR, I want the experience to be seamless and premium. I want no workarounds, no little annoyances I need to live with, and no cumbersome setups or hardware.

And I'll pay more than what they cost now to get that experience.

Until then, I'm happy holding on to my money for the next generation of GPUs and hardware.

For that you would have to wait at least another three generations of Hmd's let alone gpu's.
Maybe 2025. With my guess not truly hassle free until 2030.

So don't hold your breath.

I'll jump in now, and if you don't mind could you advise me what CPU, GPU and RAM is required for optimum performance for current versions of VR.

I don't like noisy PC's, I don't mind spending extra to have a quiet PC, I've always toyed with the idea of placing a noisy PC in a small bar fridge to shut it up, or perhaps get a bigger fridge and kill two beers with one stone

Any I5 or better I7 processor should be enough with 16 GB ram. It's all about the GPU, so buy the best one you can afford. Right now the GTX 1070 TI offers the best performance at an affordable price.

Just pick up a Rift. Besides, there are plenty of other things you can play in VR.

if money is no object, sure, however I think a GTX1070 is a nice middle ground for the CURRENT oculus rift.

my hope is for CV2 (its not here for vive 1.5 it seems) oculus will have perfected foveated rendering so the gpu requirements will not go up as much as some fear

yeah the 1070Ti may be a good shout actually... (i dont know much about that one TBH)

budget depending i would say a good mid range gaming pc would do well to consider a Ryzen 5 1600X

if you are an over clocker however then intel chips win out as from what i can tell they overclock much better (i have over a 25% overclock on my 6core 12 thread i7)

Overclocked it would be a very good buy but it all depends on how good of a bargain you can find. Still seems like there are some 1060 cards out there for a decent price but for me, a 1060 isn't enough of an upgrade. A 1070 ti would be the sweet spot but prices have gone to crap.

Almost the performance of a 1080 and in reality just $60-$100 cheaper than the 1080.
The recommendation for it is still pretty much: Save some more money and go for the 1080.

But now I would simply wait we are potentially just a week or less away from getting an announcement from Nvidia.
I would honestly expect something during CES this week.

I doubt Nvidia will make an announcement during CES as they've already did their press conference, however, Huang likes to make surprise announcements so it's not impossible. As far as pricing of video cards... Have you looked at pricing within the last week? The prices and availability of Nvidia on Newegg here in the states is total crap... It seems like the best value is the AORUS GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming Box for $599. GTX 1070ti card going for less than 1070s, 1060s going for $500-600, 1080s going for $850 and 1080ti cards costing $1200. Neweggs in house supply is gone and only has cards from 3rd party vendors. Amazon is worse and the only decent values out there are the odd chain that hasn't run out yet.

All because

Crypto prices has caused everything remotely capable of mining to be sold out or jacked up... Unless Ethereum price drops back under $500-600 (currently $1200) things will stay sold out for awhile. This doesn't bode well for pricing on the next gen cards if they are decent at mining.
