Wait for next generation PC VR or wait for ED VR for the PS4 Pro ?.

But now I would simply wait we are potentially just a week or less away from getting an announcement from Nvidia. I would honestly expect something during CES this week.

Nah, all we'll get from nvidia at CES is the BFGD's. Most likely they'll announce gaming products based on Volta either at Computex or their own event around the same time.

Any I5 or better I7 processor should be enough with 16 GB ram. It's all about the GPU, so buy the best one you can afford. Right now the GTX 1070 TI offers the best performance at an affordable price.

Sorry, but no. It's not all about the graphics card, especially with the loads that VR put on PC's. Monitoring my i5 6600K (@4.2 Ghz) it can max out on all 4 cores while parked in a station or in busy spaces: CZs or AFs.

Having said that, both AMD and Intel have new generation CPUs out with more cores and more threads. My recommendation for any serious VR build would be at least 6 cores or any CPU with more than 4 threads. Preferably 8 or more threads.

And as others have mentioned, next generation GFX reveal from Nvidia might be literally days away, but if you can't wait I suppose the 1070ti is best bang for your buck.

Just upgrade to 1080..

Hi

I have upgraded my i5 6600 (which is overclocked to 4.2 GHZ) but (currently)only running with 8 GB RAM , with an 1080 by replacing my 970. The (8GB upgrade will follow, but this because to be sure to not limit the game, although until now it was oddly sufficient - I did not face any restirctions like stuttering etc.)

I did a lot of tweaking, starting with Ultra VR settings and then customizing...

Result is: I would not play Elite anymore without my OCulus and my HOTAS X52, as the immersion is just great. I have played Elite for approx 290hrs, but only since having VR it feels like to sit in areal space ship...and get this different feeling of size of all the object in the game. But basically you have to try elite with VR to experience it, no description will ever be able to really catch the feeling to play elite with VR - I am hooked- even more than before.

to the above discussion 1070Ti or 1080- I have decided to take the 1080 because there is not much difference in price and in regard to power I see it more as sufficient.

Only hicks I have experienced (before twaking) was in some(oddly not all) space stations, not in RES, thus I have reduced the shadows and gloom(as I read in other threads about which settings take more power but do not have a real effect in VR glasses). since that no drops are present, but honstly I also do not see an change in game quality. What was setup was the SSMD =1,5for the rift (while for monitor it was reduced, because this is only for bystanders) to be able to better read text.

As the others said you can wait for next moths (only to wait for the announcement of NVIDIA makes sense) but else I am really glad I did not further wait for the VR.

I cannot state details now(as I am not at my computer)thus I hope I have stated my changes correctly.

In short: VR is worth to take a shot right now (only GPU announcement is interesting, on the other hand this will take time until new gpu will have reasonable price- same as was with the 1080..)

fly safe

The 1080 has higher bandwidth ram that may be better for VR. Other than that, price is the determining factor. I wish now that I bought the MSI GTX 1080 for $489 I saw in November... The card is currently selling for $849 IF you can find it!

I have bought the Gainward GTX1080 Phoenix Golden Sample - price 550 EUR, (in Nov. 2017), not a MSI because mostly out of stock and higher price (~currently at 600).

The general consensus of this thread has been get VR now as long as you have a 1070+. I was in full agreement until the announcement of the HTC Vive Pro. The only problem with this is the highest spec GPUs can barely keep up with the current generation HMD requirements. Perhaps slightly lower graphics settings will result in better perceived quality given the Vive Pro is supposed to have substantially less screen door effect (SDE). The Vive Pro is expected to be released in the summer and to be more expensive than at least the Rift.

Having said that the pace at which computer hardware has been improving and therefore being released has been awesome since the 90s or so, thank you Gordon Moore. The downside to this is the will always be something better if you wait a little while. From time to time there is a good reason to wait but usually you just have to get over it and buy now or you'll end up waiting forever.

On one hand I was very excited about the VIve pro, but only short time later it was very sobering as I could not find any estimations about necessary PC-power which has to be build in to support it.
But I assume you will need some NVIDIA Titan(i think this is the expensive monster called) and some highend CPU- so with 900EUR for the Vive pro and some 4-5000 EUR you will end at a price which is by far too high for me, thus I am again happy to have my VR experience (already without waiting) with my oculus, as the price of the VIVE pro configuration is just out of discussion for me... and the estimated delivery is somewhere at the end of 2018.... and the oculus will come with the oculus2 version for 2019..then you wait again......

The increase in resolution isn't any greater than what most 1080 owners are running already via supersampling.
you should be ok, just use less super sampling with the pro.
Chances are you will possibly not even need it.

I live in the middle of the Indian ocean, hence my options aren't many even if money were no object, Amazon won't ship to my location along with many other vendors who have a Ti item in stock, I've managed to scrounge the following.

I7 - 7700 K
PCI-E 8GB NVIDIA MSI GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G (DDR5)

I've decided to go with a Oculus CV1.

Thanks for all your input, much appreciated.

it has the same screens as the Samsung Odyssey and it doesn't need a Titan...

I just wonder , if the samsung odyssey has the same screens, then it already has the improved resolution - then the vive pro is nothing new...

Are you sure it has the same screens with same resolution per eye?
nevertheless there will be always some better hardware be available
