Waiting 300 seconds to download data... so I wrote this post in the meantime

What kind of gameplay is this?
I restored the power in an empty settlement - there are no alarms, no enemies, no danger to be had.

Why do I have to wait 300 seconds doing literally nothing while I download a bunch of data?

I would understand when trying to steal data that it gives a sense of urgency but in an empty settlement?
It's just a waste of time, nothing else.

Ah, another 140 seconds to go...

EDIT: Found another port in the same settlement... another 150 seconds added to waiting time. Fun!
EDIT2: And a third port with a 60 seconds waiting time.

That is 510 seconds, over 8 minutes thankyouverymuch.

This is also interesting, since we can have telepresence in a system 60.000ly away in... realtime. Just imagine the speed and volume that must be transfered. But no chance to download the tiny bits of data from somwhere else.
For me it would be fine that we have to find the dataport and start the download and then go on with searching an empty settlement, using the WLAN that 'should' be present in the settlement. If we are in an occupied settlement we might need to stay close, only using the short 'bluetooth' range of the device, so no one could monitor the data theft, therefor lowering the bandwith of the download, or shuting down the WLAN alltogether while security closes in and starts to interrogate and scan strangers. Not outright shoot them...

The tether range is a gameplay element and it works well.

These data ports can be really fun when you're in restricted areas or you do not want to be scanned by a guard. Sadly, most of them aren't in those situations and even if they all were, 60s is still enough time to wait. I think the longest for one data item should be 60s and the maximum per download never higher. That is to say, all data should be concurrently downloaded and the maximum time should be the upper limit.

 Seriously?.... you know you don't have to download the data... just sayin'.
I'm sure he wanted the data that amounted to 300s. Longest I had was 240s and I needed all of it. Usually, it's about 10-30s and that's fine. It starts pushing tedium at 60s and there's never actually any reason for it either. If a data port is challenging to download from then it isn't more challenging because it's 60s or higher compared to 30s. Anything up to 60s is more than enough. And most data ports are actually entirely devoid of any challenge (you are free to download and go afk without any fear of reprisal).

Net result is game play amounting to standing still for several minutes. This is not game play. And the suggestion to alter this to something else is a reasonable one.

It's usually just the worthless garbage that has this long download times. And when you have a data port full of garbage and still feel the need to download it, well, that's five minutes you waste on essentially spam.

That touches another issue - it would be nice if the game would let me know what is garbage and what isn't.
Or what is planned to be used in future or isn't.

I still don't know if I will ever need some data (and there is no definitive answer on this so far) so I just grab everything.
Still doesn't justify the 300 seconds wait time.
