Waiting for Distant Worlds 2...

...I know it's wrong. I could be doing other things, but I seem to have hit Peak Elite and nothing much else is interesting me. I don't do combat. I could earn more money but I have no need for extra ships and stuff.

So I wait...for something big and exciting.

I thought that might be the guardians update. Alas not. Looking at the next update. I don't think so.

I wait.....

You could join the Distant Stars Expedition, starting January 15th.
And after that you could join up with the Mercury 7 Expedition, starting in early March.

I thought of the Distant Stars Expedition, but I think it demands a bit too much Engineer action for me.

Not heard of this Mercury 7 Expedition. I will investigate.

Holy thread resurrection.

I know that Distant Worlds 2 was being considered around the new content and the releases from Frontier. Just curios if this is still the case (I notice the expedition hub suggests it's happening this year)?

Always curious!

You could always start Distant Worlds 2. That's how it begins: one person, one crazy idea, one other person joins in, etc.

What Zulu said!

My most fun and rewarding times in ED has been whenever I helped set stuff in motion - be it big or small... I would recommend trying out airshows and high-speed formation flying with a group of crazy people (if you want to try organizing something else than setting up an expedition halfway across the galaxy ;) )

DWE 2 is still a "maybe". Will happen if one update, someday, brings enough solid exploration stuff to make it worth the effort for the organizers and worth the second round-trip for all DWErs interested in DWE 2.

There is a bit of wisdom that applies here, methinks.

"I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul."
- William Ernest Henley, "Invictus".

You don't have to consume or create. Just make your own path. Assuming you have the jump range or some method of mining jumponium, nothing is stopping you from flying to Beagle Point right now.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I must admit I also assumed it would have a different destination. Not sure why. Alas the exploration baubles are in short supply.

I may well just head off. Once I've mastered this camera system. Which I'm sure it awesome but is like herding cats at the moment.

I think atmospheric landings will be the thing that will bring again lots of new possibilities, that will open up new stuff to find and bring lots of people together for a 'Distant Clouds'.
If that happens, I do hope that this time around it won't be 90+% Asp and Anaconda. :)

Keeping the same destination makes a lot of sense, BUT going westside this time probably is the sensible thing to do ;)

Who knows?... that being said, atmo landings would be like airless landings: fun at the beginning, but basically, once you've seen one, you've seen them all. I think Erimus and Kaii (and myself for that matter) are expecting new mechanics and more depth, not just filler content.

Im hoping the same. I know im definitely NOT going with neither of those. I just did BP with Annie, never again.
But, as i know people, they usually want to get things done the easiest way. For me, Anaconda was a dull choice, even the Abyss lost its meaning as dangerous crossing where you might end up in a bad place and with Annie, you can cross it anywhere without worries. I did not like that..

As soon as 2.4 drops, im planning on going on a full year expedition around the galaxy with Corvette... how about that? ;)

Sounds interesting. A full circumnavigation I gather?

Personally I prefer the Anaconda primarily for the jump range; I don't like to see systems just out of my reach when I could have got to them in the Anaconda, secondly the slf.

Edit: Come to think of it, a circumnavigation expedition would be a natural, although ambitious extension of DWE.

Yup, full circle. :)
But, thats just a one plan doing donuts in my head, idk if im doing that.
I still rather wait for more info on DWE 2 than go on the trip on my own. I really loved the social aspect of DWE, all the basecamps and meetings, best thing with the whole event.

And what comes to jump range, for me its much more important doing exploration in a ship im comfortable with, thats why i have never flown with Asp anywhere. Its a fine bubble runner with 48Ly range, but its so dull that i cant imagine going anywhere far with it.

Unless 2.4 has some interesting additions for explorers, I very much doubt we'll see DWE2 until sometime during season 3.

Distant Worlds 3302 was a massive time commitment for the organizers (5 months all in all, with 2 months prep-work and 3 months for the expedition itself), so to make it worthwhile, exploration needs some love.

For me, to even begin working on DWE2, exploration would need at least one or two of the following.

  • Atmospheric planetary landings, or as a bare minimum volcanic & lava world planetary landings.
  • More planetary features and POIs to discover, and new exploration mechanics and equipment to discover them.
  • Distant Civs, either rogue AI or alien.. something that would warrant a long expeditionary mission to either trade with and/or scientifically study other sentient life out there in the black.

One idea I'd love DWE2 to incorporate would be something along the lines of looking for and cataloguing geysers, fumroles, and organic lifeforms - but there would need to be more varieties of each and crucially proper equipment/mods able to locate and catalogue this kind of info. Apart from 3rd party databases and websites, at the moment there is no way to catalogue different species or collate this kind of information and sell it or donate it to in-game scientific institutions - a sort of Universal Cartographics of alien organic discoveries. Basically DWE2 would be awesome if it had an in-game scientific research goal at its core, and not just be another endurance/sight-seeing trip.

Its looking like 2.4 will be aliens, possibly hostile ones, and ones on our doorstep. I'm not sure how that could fit into a DWE kind of event, unless these alien inhabited worlds have new content that explorers find interesting enough to go discover and study.

Since DWE2 is apparently not happening in the foreseeable future, but you loved its social aspect, why not look up a few people from before, and create something of your own? If you start organising and have a decent plan, people will come. You could also have goals beyond this being another sightseeing trip, there are plenty of places to survey, things to look for.

For example, here's an idea, which also ties in with what Erimus wrote: hostile aliens are coming, so, like the Dynasty Expedition, let's prepare for the possibility of having to flee. The goal would be to visit different nebulae and look for worlds that are as close to being like Earth as possible. (Nebulae ought to be decent places to hide, then there are also the views.)
Hm, actually, I would likely take part in such an expedition too.

I respectfully disagree. On one hand the airless worlds kept me flying for at least 6 months and even now I enjoy the occasion of landing on any worlds. Plus I do hope that with 2.4 we’ll get that promised update with regard of material coloring, revealing the true nature of the worlds.
When it comes to planets with atmoshere, a whole lot of new variables come into play like different erosion, atmoshpere types and so on – even basic Mars-like worlds will be very-very, well, atmospheric. :)
However, I do believe the atmospheric landings will be launched with gas giants, as they don’t need to implement surface features with it but can play the largesse of atmospheric features very well.

As discussed in the other thread, I’m also aiming for a Corvette. :)
For any expedition on my own, I’d probably go to and around the core – it must contain 90% of all the stars and extremes of the Galaxy. Very rewarding place!
