Newcomer / Intro waiting in queue to dock

I think it could be alright if it happened once in a great while but it happens to me almost every time I come back from a mission. I should also mention more often than not the docking process begins again with out enough time to hit the landing pad. I've been given the trespass warning and had to beat a hasty retreat from inside the station before it executes me...it's becoming tedious... I don't need the game to be like driving to work stuck in traffic on a Monday morning.

I found this frustrating - it is a lot less of a problem if you move away from the starting systems; the pads are a lot less crowded. One thing I am saying to everyone now; are you playing with a mouse or joystick? because docking with a mouse is a complete and total hound of an experience... a cheap joystick does the trick (I have a mad catz cyborg, cost me about £25). It's literally night and day - using the hat for your thrusters, and the main flight stick for flying controls is a dream.

Since moving to a joystick, I haven't run out of time once - remember as well there's a bind available for setting zero forward motion (default is "X" I think) - brings you to a dead stop quite quickly - again, that's well handy docking.

If you are running out of time with docking should do the tutorial a few times to get used to it without having to worry about a penalty. Also before you request permission to dock get with in 3k of the station and line up with the entrance; that way once you get a spot you just race right in and the land.

I've never had to wait. Is it possible that's because I mostly play solo? Or am I just in a lonely part of the populated areas?

You're telling me? One time I was super low on fuel and got to the station just in time. Just as I was about to land where they told me to, another ship came and landed there. Wouldn't you know I ran out of fuel and was just sitting there literally feet away from the landing pad. I had to self destruct. Needless to say I was plenty p'od! LOL!

I assume the OP is referring to the docking computer waiting for others to land first. If you have managed to get a landing permit then you have right of way over other ships who cannot land until you have vacated the pad due to you having reserved it with your docking request. I have had the docking computer wait for a large period of time and after 5 minutes of sitting still with nothing coming in or going out of the Coriolis, I took over and throttled up to put the ship in the slot and then let the computer take over again and it docked just fine. It has happened to me once in 25 auto docking attempts. It is a minor embuggerance but you can get round it.

You can come in quite fast and let the DC takeover when you are inside. Handy, when you don't want to be scanned.

That's what I do, so much quicker to go into the space station/get close to pad and then let auto dock takeover.

I should have been a little more clear... my fault, this is happening with a docking computer. Even with out the computer I never really had trouble getting to the pad in time (may not have been the most graceful though)

Yes...I was. Thanks for the advice on the throttle override... I didn't think of that. I have been sitting outside with nothing coming or going :/

Thanks for the advice... I do have a joystick, I'll look into the key bind for 0 speed. The main issue is I wasn't smart enough to override the docking computer with my throttle! From what I've read I can jump the queue and then engage the computer if I need to inside the bay...
