Walk around, now with space legs! A season 3 speculation thread.

****DISCLAIMER****

This is highly speculation, only FD knows what is planned for season 3, however this is most likely the next feature in Elite Dangerous.

What can we expect and how will it transform the game?

Space legs, this will be one of the most important feature to me anyway, why you ask? Because since the early days back in 1984, I wanted to get out of my ship and walk around. It's the freedom you get by doing so that is so interesting.

Lets me clarify, I am not interested in running around shooting at stuff. I want to explore, investigate old ruins, deserted stations and ships. I would like to have more tools for doing science in the game.

How will FD do this, will it be traditional MMO, go to A shoot X, bring me Y, or will it be something different.

Lets use The Outside as a reference point. In case you don't know this was a game FD developed for Codemasters, and was "Canceled" in 2011.

"The player controls a CIA intelligence officer by the name of Jameson, who can use various hand-to-hand combat styles and weapons."

So hand to hand combat and weapons are already developed or in some form of development. We can for sure expect that some of this will be reused for the FPS expansion in season 3.

"Several key proprietary technologies, which Frontier has been developing for some time, make their debut in The Outsider and bring the sort of freedom of action first seen in Elite up to date"

So what are those key proprietary technologies, they have developed? difficult to say, maybe the PG of faces coming here in ED for the commander creation tool.

"The developers claim that the game abandons the traditional, prescriptive, mostly linear story of current generation games, and replaces it by simulating characters’ motivations and aims. This gives the player genuine freedom to change the story outcomes."

The Outsider was developed for a SP game, however the same game mechanic could be used in missions. If you take a mission, you will be able to change the outcome as it will be related to your actions during the mission.

"A new animation system is being developed for the game with the aim of giving a more realistic feel as it is adaptive and less scripted than typical animations."

So they already have the foundation of the animations nailed, as this was some years ago FD need to update it with the possibility to do EVA type of interaction and combat.

"The game was almost complete, save for final recorded dialogue and cut scenes. The actual game is fully playable from start to finish, and though not fully polished gameplay-wise, it was still looking good and close to being a damn fine cover-based shooter. There were some clever twists with disguises, and how the civilians behaved around you. Some really clever AI (or the illusion of cleverness if you like).

I know that, we sometimes laugh at the AI in Elite, however this is a different kind of AI needed, I for one are really looking forward to see how the NPCs around you will react, combined with the crowd mechanics we have seen in planet coaster we are heading towards interesting times for sure.

How will weightless mechanics work? Here we can't find much information, only a few pictures here and there. However the ships are designed to be operated in a weightless conditions, as there are not gravity generators in Elite, only by spinning things you can achieve gravity.

Looking at the cockpits you will see a lot of places you can grab for moving around in a weightless condition, so this mechanic must be well designed to work well if we need to use it to move around in our ships.

I hope they'll manage to introduce an unexpected element as they did with SRV: something expanding interaction with the world in a fresh way, requiring skill yet giving immediate fun yet leaving room for mastering it.

Given the "no magical gravity" bias, I'm pretty confident they'll play with variable low-G environments and tools that'll help handling them: personal jetpack, grappling hook. Until having ability to walk in 1G space station, legs won't be that much of traditional use. And practically this will tend to help keeping the VR experience seamless, as it'll still rely on being harnessed to a peripheral (seat/eva suit) used to move around.

In priority order (descending) here's where I hope the first person experience will be geared towards:
- EVA in human or alien derelicts, wreckages
- Wandering around in ships' interiors for some maintenance activities
- Walk in stations for some social (NPC or players) interactions

I won't mind fights, though I'm not sure it's really essential for the experience. Frontier should stand out of the traditional FPS, and explore new areas of the first person experience.

There is a short concept animation somewhere of a pilot moving through a Sidewinder.
Sadly I am unable to find it in my archive.

Some did it with the Oculus:

I'm not so sure we'll see walking in Stations in season 3. There's a lot of awesome looking tech going into Planet Coaster with NPC characters, crowds, walking around ect which looks like it could translate really well to stations and bases ED, but since that has just gone alpha I'd imagine the guys who are experts at this stuff will be tied up for a while before they're ready to work on ED. Maybe it'll just be zero G stuff to start with, so onboard your own ship and EVAs in space and planet surfaces.

Sure, however just remember when the space leg season starts, the first part will be your own ship, then stations and outposts.
It all need to be ready for season 4 that will be the atmospheric planets.

And I do not believe we will see low gravity in our ships. Only ships big enough to have an artificial spinning compartment will have that. The Elite lore are very specific regarding this.

I have a fear about walking around in Elite...

We are getting avatars for the minor factions and my fear is that we will end up walking around a station trying to find the office of the contact to talk to for a mission or reward... Stacking missions would be a real pain for those that do it. If they do go down this route I just hope they have the common sense to leave the BB available to use in the ship.

I saw STO go through this walking around the ship phase and it ended up being a complete waste of time despite the community asking for it for months. They even added special missions to show you that it was possible but once the players had walked around the ship once, there was little to no reason to do it again.

In other words, I paid to fly in space not walk around a station. I also see no reason to walk around on a planet, the SRV does a fine job as it is...

Yes, there's a lot of bogus good idea traps hiding in. X-Rebirth suffered the same.
Make it mandatory and it will end breaking the flow, make it optional and it could end unused costly underused dev work.

That's why my top priority is first person being used in new and dedicated situations, ways and goals (hence the derelict/wreck exploration), or extend some features without eliminating the vanilla ones (courier missions, asassination, hacking)

Though implementing a first person cam just to hang out in the lovely work FDEV artists have already made, just for the sake of it, could be an eye-pleasing worthy yet easy/cheap addition:

Well, the SRV can only take you so far, the gameplay you would get by adding an "FPS" mechanic will make the game a lot deeper.
You will the be able to capture a station, the wars will give more meaning, and the undermining & sabotage will be more direct in the game.

note that once we get the atmospheric planets, you can't always use the SRV, heavy vegetation areas or even cities will not be accessible. Only by foot will you be able to get to those ares. I look at ArmA and see how they have done it, look at the new tropical maps, very dense jungle.

Regarding missions, the BBS should not go away, this is where you get the day to day missions, however if you want a more special mission you will need to find that person who can give you that mission. Also it will give you places where you can meet other players, like bars and clubs.

> Indeed, I enjoy a good walking simulator from time-to-time, but I'm not too keen on an Elite: Dangerous walking simulator.

However, I'm dying to get up from my seat and float about my own ship!

I am looking forward to walking into a shop and buying some stiletto's. If I can see my feet I want to look good.

LOL, good point.

I think the first phase of the space leg thingy will be in ship activities, like repairs, and investigations. Slave mutiny anyone? they get out and what to take over the ship o_O

I'm doubtful space legs will be in the game in any meaningful way in Season 3. Maybe walking around ship interiors, although not sure FD would go for just that. My guess is Season 4.

Season 4? Man, Season 3 better be pretty dang compelling to postpone moving about your own ship.

It's here :)

I think the fears of stations being a dead-space are real, but they could have great gameplay aspects alongside the vibe if given a really bestial dev run. (I expect they'll be the last artificial environment released, with ships/EVA coming earlier). In my dream version (which would extend way beyond Season 3)...

* Meeting NPCs who you've tangled with in space: IE both friends and foes, with emergent information, missions and combat stemming from that. Avoiding gangs and zones which are hostile to you could be cool too. (Hell, imagine infiltrating a base that's hostile to you completely, just to meet one core contact).

* Low-G hijinks and stealth: I would love to be able to essay large 'FA-off' style arcs through the air in larger spaces, as well as have some kind of tighter jet control. Possibly boost/heat limited on the latter, as with the SRV. The potential for stealth is also intriguing. (I imagine Magboots would be clanky. Unless you bought stealth boots of course...).

* Weapon metas: The idea of opting for quiet recoil-less weapons vs powerful ones which require you to plant yourself could be cool. (Just the idea of being able to flip your orientation and plant on the wall has intriguing cover and shoot-out options, if that becomes a thing).

* Community Content adding more life: I'd love the idea of live-feeds of CQC matches, proper hubs for clans to gather in, animated Galnet segments. If they ever got procedural voicework going then there could even be comments from basic NPCs about recent events etc changing daily.

One of the biggest things I see them struggling to overcome though is the how to voice procedural characters issue. Will be very happy if they get even close tho :)

FWIW I wrote a lil fanfic dream of how some of this could look down the line :)

The ability to walk around is probably my most anticipated feature. More than anything else, I just want to be able to walk/move around my ship. The reality is, right now I can’t help but feel like I’m playing as a ship instead of as a pilot. In other words, it’s hard for me to feel like I’m a commander piloting my own ship through the galaxy…instead I feel like I’m some kind of sentient ship flying around with some dude sitting inside.

I think having access to the insides of the ship will really help with the sense of scale in the game. Right now, all we can do is look out the front window and it’s almost impossible to really understand how large these ships are. Being able to walk around the cockpit and cargo holds will really add to the immersion in my opinion. When I’m on a long flight to cross a system I always wish I could point my ship in the right direction, throttle up, and get up and walk around doing “stuff” instead of just sitting there staring ahead.

Now the question is, what kind of “stuff” will/should we be able to do? I’m not really sure, but I hope Frontier has some ideas for this because as much as I’m eagerly awaiting this feature, I’d hate for these ships to just be empty shells. I want to make repairs, check on cargo, look for stowaways, watch space TV, check messages…just anything.

You are seriously speculating on Season 3? How about we just get the season content we have already paid for first huh?

Oh, so we can't look a bit further ahead? well you, I and everyone else who payed for season 2 will get our moneys worth of content. To me the walk around is just more interesting from a game mechanics point of view.

Agree 100% commander.

Depends on the individual. Some only plan for the next hour, personally I like to plan ahead as far as possible, so whilst we don't have an exact roadmap, I would like to conjecturalise on what may or may not be in seasons 2,3 and 4.
