Walkthroughs: tell us about ones you have seen before.

Hey everybody. Today I wanted to talk about walkthrough exhibits that you have been in before.
Example, one that I have been through many times is a South American WE at the Beardsley Zoo that had toucans, some small birds and sloths. Vancouver aquarium had a similar one that had macaws, sloths and even caimans. For the record there’s a bridge and a barrier so nobody actually can get close or dropped in to meet the caimans and the WE was big keeping the macaws at high levels away from guests. The Alaska Sealife center has a section of their aviary that guests can walk into to see the puffins and pelagic birds, gives the birds plenty of space and I would do my talks near false rocks acting like a small barrier. I have been through songbird aviaries.
Now we have been making many posts speculating on what the future of WE holds and what can we realistically expect.
Many of you have mentioned
Bald eagles. Absolutely no way no how. They are unbelievably dangerous, I have been charged at by one and their talons can cause severe damage so I cannot see them being WE, only way would be a proper aviary or a non WE but exhibit.
Humming birds: can realistically see
Small monkeys: if you can tell me about WEs that have them I will listen
Sloths: do we really need anymore?
Sugar gliders: anyone been through any?
Parrots: some of you have advised against noting how dangerous parrots and macaws can get if they are in a bad mood.
Turtle ponds:
Koi ponds: ponds that have a bridge you can walk over, feed or just watch them swim

Am I missing any other good suggestions and please share any pics or memories of using WEs in real life.

Walkthrough exhibits with small monkeys are incredibly common in Europe. I know that primate walkthroughs are almost non existent in North America but here they are absolutely everywhere. Basically every zoo has a lemur walkthrough now and there is also many that have callitrichids too.

To give an example of a famous zoo, London Zoo, has FOUR primate walkthroughs. It's rainforest building is home to a variety of callitrichids, there is a ring-tailed lemur walkthrough nearby, and there is additional walkthroughs in the zoo for colobus and squirrel monkeys. Not primates of course, but London also has the infamous spider walkthrough in its invertebrate house as well as multiple walkthrough aviaries.

I've been through a lot of WE aviaries with many kinds of birds. In Antwerp Zoo, the cape Buffalo exhibit is part of a walkthrough aviary. You can't reach the buffalos of course but you see them and walk among a lot of different african birds, including vultures and ibises.

I've also been into several WE with lemurs and other small monkeys (tamarins, squirrel monkeys, white-faced sakis). Also WE with sloths, bats/flying foxes, maras, penguins, fallow deer. That's all I can think of right now.

Yeah in europe walkroughs for small monkeys and lemurs are really common.
One semi local zoo has one for rock wallabies, unfortunately it was closed when i went there.

I've been to several WTE in Brazil once. One Big park, different sections. But it was pretty much all walkthrough.

It was bird park. What i remember most (this was a long time ago) were macaws, curassows and hummingbirds and there was a butterfly house.

I don't think i 've been in any other WTE though.

There is an asian bird walkthrough aviary in the columbus zoo i visited this summer. It had a great selection of medium sized birds, reeves muntjac and asian tortoise. Never took any pics of the walkthrough layout itself but a couple animal pics:

I've never been in a walkthrough exhibit that wasn't revolved around birds.
Well, sorta. There is a large pyramid in Galveston that's basically a huge walkthrough jungle. It's been many years, but if I'm not mistaken they had monkeys.

Oh, and the Houston Museum of Natural Science has the Cockrell Butterfly Center, filled with butterflies (duh) and it had a free roaming green iguana before they had to put him in an enclosure.

Another walkthrough (in a way) are piranha tunnels. They are these little tubes kids (and 22 year old Quells) crawl through that looks kinda like your underwater with piranhas

This one!!

It looks better than i remember. I guess they improved it lol

Is my dreamed SA aviary wishlist lol

I walked straight in and straight out of this. The keeper inside laughed at me. All I think is at least I did it haha.

Most walkthroughs I've seen are birds. But also as above I think every uk zoo ive been to has lemurs. Erm... wallabies. There's one at Yorkshire wildlife park that has capybara and mara, some small monkeys I cant remember which (or at least they did last time I didnt see any mara).

My local zoo Zlín has a walkthrough enclosure with Australian Pelicans. I have never seen them so up close as in there, it is so incredible.

They are free to roam on the road for visitors or in the lake. I am not sure if they are clipped, but probably so, because I have never seen them fly or out of that enclosure.

Forgot about tortoises, iguanas, wallabies and red kangaroos.

Oh and forgot about the Emu+Red Kangaroo+Prairie Dog (I know, that one is weird) walkthrough enclosure. Cannot believe the Emu is still not a walkthrough animal in game. 🥲

In Pairi daiza you walk next to the lemurs. I always see People petting them as Well which I think is just not done.. They also have a Walkthrough with squirrel monkeys. And a Walkthrough with some type of flying Fox and squirrel. Then there is the Walkthrough with two-toed sloth and some tropical birds. And also the native american village with ironically fallow deer running around.

What they don't have is Walkthrough with emu/Wallaby. They are kept separate. Also the Tamarins and Sugar gliders are not Walkthrough. I would love to have both in game. Sugar gliders would probably fit best in regular exhibits.

To not talk about large parks:

In a small park south of Paris (Rambouillet), which is a full walkthrough park there are deers, fallow deers, roe deers, wild boars.

In a small park in Val d'Aosta (Italy), a while ago there were walktrhough enclosure with chamois and ibexes. I don't know if it expanded or not with time.

My local zoo just has the average wallaby walkthrough which is only open 1 hour a day during summer.

In Bioparc Valencia they have a big lemur walkthrough habitat with 6 species of lemurs and the Aldabra giant tortoises (although the tortoises have a separate area and can't really access the human path).

I have to be honest, I don't really like walkthrough habitats. They must be really annoying for the animals living there.

When I visited London with my family some of them refused to go in, it was a cool experience.

The one at YWP also had agouti when I visited, I know the lineup for it changed recently including the monkeys.

I agree. There should be enough options for the animals to hide and get away from People. But depending on the species they might also make their live more interesting. Think of very curious species like lemurs.

If we are talking about walkthrough exhibits in game terms (a sort of covered walkthrough aviary type display), these are things that could work that are not birds (not sure how they'd work, also think they'd have been added already) and could not be reasonably expected as habitat animals:
If expanded to include general enclosures that visitors can walk through, I have encountered loads for all sorts of primates (lemurs, callitrichids, squirrel monkeys, saki and titi monkeys, owl monkeys, red howler monkeys, colobus and Barbary macaques), sika deer, flamingos, penguins, tamanduas, muntjac deer, mara, wallabies, capybara and agoutis, plus butterflies and the London Zoo orbweaver spiders.

Ones I haven't seen personally but have been successfully done in zoos include for all sorts of caprids (ibex, chamois, mouflon and aoudad), sitatunga, blackbuck, arctic fox, red panda and even more species of primate (including Hanuman langurs, owl-faced guenons and talapoin monkeys).

Youre right. I forgot about those. I dont remember seeing them either when we went last month. They had some new monkeys inside an enclosure but still had climbing frame outside so maybe eventually they will be out

In the Netherlands we have the Apenheul which is pretty much one giant monkey walkthough exhibit. There are bigger apes that cannot get to you obviously, but the smaller monkeys pretty much have free reign of the zoo (within set areas of the zoo). You can only enter the zoo with monkey-proof bags.

Another zoo (ZooParc Overloon) has three walkthrough exhibits. The first one is an African penguin exhibit, immediately after you walk into a kangaroo + wallaby exhibit. More to the middle of the park you have a lemur walkthrough.
