Wanderlust is building - Min jump range to explore?

Well I'll be probably doing a fair bit of map review and economy jumps as I'm more about looking st stuff than going great distances. But now I'm wondering if I should take my Viper IV rather than my Cobra IV as I've been doing some mission stuffs to see if i can get the mats for the engineers and my fully combat fit viper runs about 20ly laden.....hmmmmm

You are thinking good thoughts, Madrax :)

It seems to me, as a novice explorer, that the best ship for exploration is the one you most enjoy flying. You need a few 'essentials' e.g.: a decent scoop, a discovery scanner, and probably a surface scanner. It is good to be able to jump something greater than 20 Ly. But beyond that... take a few less extreme trips out into the dark and see what you like.

I admire the folks who strip their ships down to the bare bones and get crazy jump ranges... but I prefer shields and guns for the inevitable interdictions on the way home, thank you very much ;) And I am a 'belt and suspenders' kind of guy- I like having extra 'jumps' in my fuel tank. It seems to me that a fully equipped ship will be challenged to get much over 40 Ly... probably the mid 30's is a more reasonable expectation.

Yeah I hear you :) As far I'm concerned if I don't like flying it I won't, no matter what the stats say. Which is exactly why I keep coming back to the Cobra MK IV. Don't know why I just love flying it vOv.

I like the Viper IV and would fly it rather than the Cobra III but I keep going back to the Cobra IV.

I really like the cockpits from the Lakon ships but I just haven't pulled my finger out to work up the cash for a fully fit explorer with them yet. Might have to take the plunge when fighters come out and I grab a keelback o_O !!

I'm actually building a Keelback explorer in preparation :D

With a modded FSD I can carry a fighter and SRV and still jump 30LY. Anacondas are the jump-range kings, but they turn really slooooowly, so I wouldn't say I enjoy flying it. I find smaller ships more fun, which is why I've been modding my Asp :)
