Plus - it's FUN. I nearly had my behind handed to me last night. In a maxed out FDL with all fixed weapons. Interdicted an NPC pirate and his 2 pirate buddies. Hadn't used fixed weapons in a while, but thought this'd be easy. They managed to get my unboosted shields down to 1 ring - and embarrassingly - at least one of them was rated Mostly Harmless. And they were flying Sidewinders!!!!! Of course, it didn't help that I felt I'd won before even firing the first shot, but my lack of humility nearly got the best of me. OK - that's an exaggeration - but fixed weapons are simply so much more fun than gimbals. I flew with fixed weapons early on, but got tired of time-to-kill so "upgraded" to gimbals. While they make non-chaff encounters much, much more efficient, they also reduce a huge amount of the fun.
So anyone who wants a bit more fun: try fixed weapons, for a while. Not as good for shooting fish in a barrel, but much more satisfying and fun. Especially against low ranked NPCs in small ships who are smiling and waving at you as you attempt to match their rotation speed close-in (not a great idea, for the most part).
