Want to explore, have only 2.3 million credits.

What should I do? Advanced scanner a lone costs 1.5 million. I basically want to go out of civilized space for a week or so, then come back later to sell stuff.

Any suggestions on ship and parts to buy?

Once you get a few hundred light years away from sol, there is nothing out there to threaten you. don't worry about shield generators or weapons. With 2.3 million, I'd get the advanced discovery scanner, a detailed surface scanner and a fuel scoop, on whichever ship you can give the largest jump range with what money you have left, while still having enough money for insurance. You might have to settle for an eagle. It has a great view from the cockpit though.

Thanks.

What's a good jump range to shoot for? I really don't want to find myself not being able to go further out b/c the distance between systems is to great.

Adder : 87k
Advanced Discovery Scanner : 1.5m
Detailed Surface Scanner : 250k
C3 FSD : 57k
C3 Power Plant : 57k
A2 Fuel Scoop : 285k

There's really nothing else you need

the A3 FSD is 507,915 credits if you can stretch to it

You want a detailed surface scanner and an advanced discovery scanner, together with a grade A Frameshift drive and a decent fuel scoop. I'd not run without shields, because one interdiction will cut into your hull.

Since a Cobra is not possible, you should go for Adder or Hauler.

The Eagle's only advantage is the great canopy and view, and you dont need that when you have an advanced discovery scanner.

You should have 4 internal compartments for scanners, shields and scoop. The Eagle doesn't have that.

Jumprange should be above 20 lys. Other modules except FSD should be D grade, because they are the lightest.

Get the largest FSD. The A class FSD on the eagle will cost you 500k. with the advanced discovery scanner and the DSS, that total comes to 2.25 million. Get a cheap fuel scoop, it'll do the job. I'd suggest making 100k or so extra money, because that's all you'll need to get all this and cover the insurance, too. This build will take you virtually wherever you want--I'd suggest moving towards the center of the galaxy though. THe stars get too thin if you go rimward. There will be patches of sparse stars, but this build will see you through.

If you want to get a few extra ly out of it, downgrade everything you can--the thrusters, the power plant, the power distributor. Remember, every extra light year in range is more valuable than the one before it. Just remember you will might encounter pirates for those first few hundred light-years, but after that, all your only threat will be heat damage.

Adder would work fine as well.

The A grade FSD is nice, but for exploration is hardly a necessity.

If you want to go look at something a long way away, then it's very very nice indeed. But if you're wanting to look around the nearby area, the jumps are usually well within the 50% range on the C3.

Don't forget to get the largest fuel tank available (it's cheap.) You don't want to run out of fuel because you've hit a bunch of "stale" stars in a row.

The largest possible fuel tank is always fitted to a ship on purchase.

Star types are shown on the galactic map. A quick way to find a scoopable star is to go to the map, and the view panel, set the 2 filters both to none. Any star that is not red is scoopable. Of the red stars, SOME are scoopable, most are not.

It's very very rare to not have a scoopable star within 5 jumps of your current position.

DO top off your tank every time you can though.

I wouldn't count on that, maybe you will not encounter any life players anymore but you can stumble on some nasty NPC pulling you out of SC.

When I set out exploring in my adder, I upgraded on the fly by first buying a better fsd drive.

I then did a run out to the plieades nebula and back, selling the nav data was enough for me to get the details discovery scanner.

I then did a run out of 1000ly and back and after selling the nav data had enough for the advanced discovery scanner and so on.

Just upgraded to my cobra with a 15ly range.

That was my experience as well. Still, I would not recommend going without a shield, so I agree with Lange_666 on that point.

Sorry to newb up on ya' but.... 500 LY from where? Its my aim once I have the credits to do some exploring myself.
