Wanted after being attacked?

So it's been a while since I last played and I figured I'd try the game out. It was before patch 2.1 anyways. I grabbed a surface mission, got there, was about to land when an NPC appeared. It's kind of new for me seeing NPC ships in the middle of nowhere on a planet surface, so I thought cool. Anyways, next thing I know, it wants my cargo? I don't have cargo? It should know that because it just scanned me? Anyways, it starts attacking me and I drop my hardpoints, and blast it, poof, it's gone, but now I'm wanted? What the hell? I did scan it and it was clean to start, but once it started fire at me, it should have been wanted would it not? I remember this happening before, I guess this hasn't been fixed or am I missing something? Perhaps a bug of some kind?

Anyways, I haven't got too far in, but I love the new sounds and graphics upgrade look awesome!

I had this exact scenario happen to me the other night in Wolf 397. I was on the surface, had just jumped back in my trusty Python and in drops a pirate asking for my cargo. I scanned him first and he came up as clean (unusual for a pirate).

Now to be fair - I did have some platinum and gold I had picked up from the surface but I just let him do his scan and then start the attack knowing I had the superior firepower.

So - he definitely fired first and definitely landed a couple of shots before I opened up and turned him to space dust.

Look to the right and "WANTED" screaming at me in bold red. Wait, what? If I was the one that got attacked first, shouldn't his status have immediately changed to WANTED meaning I was free to obliterate him?

And no, I wasn't already wanted, no bounties, and not pledged in power play.

Is this normal?

(Ended up dropping in to nearest station, switching to a Sidey and letting police destroy me to lost the bounty on my head before getting back in my Python and continuing along my merry way)

Have you joined a Power Play faction?

I have not yet. Was just on a mission to recover something on the surface. The down side is now I have to avoid the stations in the area in which I was planning on heading to for 5 days or do the jump in a sidewinder. Kind of frustrating a simple first mission and it's all messed up already.

Like the other person, I was definitely under attack and took several hits before I returned fire, I know for a fact I was taking hits to start because I had the wrong fire group selected (was scanner going). So took me a moment to select the right one to return fire.

a known and ticketed bug. I sent in video evidence a few months ago.

Nope, I always have it switched off as I smuggle a lot.

Without "Report Crimes Against Me" on, an attacker will not become wanted if they are not already wanted. That's why they were able to attack you and you become wanted when defending yourself.

@OP. Check to see whether you have it on, otherwise as the poster above says, it could be a bug.

Just checked now, Report Crimes was off, this could be what caused it? Still wouldn't make sense if he attacks me, he should still become wanted. I wasn't in an Anarchy system.

The way the mechanic works, is that it's the fact of your ship's computer reporting the crime that triggers the wanted status to the attacker. Essentially, unless a crime is reported, no crime has taken place. Obviously, if the other ship was already wanted that is different.

System security plays no part in that mechanic, although even with "Report Crimes Against Me" on, in an anarchy system an attacker still won't become wanted (as there are no laws and therefore no crimes).

Yes this. He didn't become wanted as you didn't report it and then you became wanted when you opened fire on him.

BTW having it off won't help smuggling. It is "Report crimes that others commit against me", not "Report crimes that I commit" ;)

Not a bug - see above.

It is a good idea to turn it off when smuggling, as if you are interdicted and attacked, having it on will mean that the authorities turn up, and you will then get scanned and fined for your illegal cargo. :)

Ahhh, I'm such an idiot! That of course makes sense! I've got hundreds of hours playtime and I didn't twig this, I feel like a right twonk!

Yup this ^^

One of the first tips I picked up smuggling, although to be fair I do more long range haulage now where getting scanned isn't an issue so maybe I should turn it back on.
