Engineers Wanted after defending myself

As I'm sure some of you have noticed, having a bounty in 2.1 results in some pretty vicious AI hunting you.

Cruising around Hedetet 1 in my SRV - recalled the ship, not long after boarding I notice a pirate scanning me. The pirate starts firing on my ship, I launch and obliterate him, I then notice that I am wanted and have a bounty on my head.

Now I'm being hunted by an Elite ranked FDL... Is it normal to be wanted even when defending yourself?

a pirate u say.... did u by chance forget to complete the scan before shooting the poor criminal? if so, then i guess yes, since ur now a very evil person, a murderous scum of the universe... :)

If you don't scan, you're in the wrong - a horrible bit of a futuristic bureaucracy. I had one of those accidental gun hits on a security ship in a middle of a High Res, I hate that. Different, I know, but in your case and mine you want to be able to explain to the Wanted assigner "that's really not fair, I was hardly being criminal!" alas, he's a man who sticks to his rules.

If you are being shooted at there isn't a need to scan, i don't know where you got that idea from.

First obvious one - Are you sure you have the "Report crimes against me" on?
Second - are you pledged to a power and in hostile area? Let's say you're with ALD and in Hudson's space. If a Hudson's ship shoots at you, it won't get wanted.
Third, I noticed old bug return when a ship shooting at me doesn't turn red on the scanner (It still flickers, though) Maybe it's related

It does have to hit you before it will become wanted... Just shooting at you doesn't count.

And you will need "report Crimes Against Me" on.

The guy launched only after he started firing, no way in hell the NPC didn't hit him. Especially how they are at the moment.

Ummm... Wow, such a newbie mistake... Thanks mate, forgot that I turned it off during my smuggling run earlier. That is Karma for being a weapons smuggler! :D

lol Don't beat yourself over it. It happens to me all the time. That's why it was the first thing that I thought of. :)

shot :p

From being wanted after shooting anyone before the initial automatic scan is complete*. It has been like that for as long as I can remember.

That is the scan that happens when you select a target and face it. Not the Kill Warrant scanner.

Because it's a game mechanic. You can't just start opening up on people. Say if you are bounty hunting, you have to identify that the target is wanted in the system before you can legally start firing. You need that initial identification scan that reveals wanted/clean status. In this case, if the pirate wasn't wanted yet, report crimes would have flagged that pirate, but you still would need to do the identification scan to reveal that flag.

No, sorry guys this is a broken mechanic!

I am in a heavy trader ship, was trying to take off from a planet and a pirate says "Lets see whats in your hold" and then opens fire on me and takes shield down. I am too slow to turn and scan him, but my turrets kill him and I am now wanted for murder...

This seems like a bug or an oversight! These hostile ships on planets need to be already wanted!

if it just was a hostile, as others have said, a powerplay npc these can attack you if you are in their territory, you are an enemy in their home, they can attack you freely, and if you attack them local security won't like it.

Can't answer the question, but being hunted is not funny in 2.1.
I'm not sure how, but I'd managed to hit a friendly one to many times and got wanted. I high-tailed it out of there, but was thoroughly beaten. 4 Eagles and 2 'Condas.. didn't stand a chance; lol. Somewhat frustrating as I had about 400k's worth of bounty vouchers to hand in, even more frustrating is that I'd decided to head back to dock after I'd killed that last NPC. Q_Q

I think so too. In really old versions of ED, this was a problem, but in more recent versions, baddies shooting at you already show up as wanted.

This seems buggy to me.
PP aside, pre 1.2, if you were ever attacked by a pirate, and hit by fire, you wouldn't need to scan the attacking ship, it would be wanted automatically.

... if report crimes is on. Else being shot at is just ... being shot at - you can't shoot back unless they're legitimate targets in the system.

Sorry for wasting everyone's time!

Hey dude

I'm glad you posted this too. I've been wondering what effect it had.

What makes it beneficial to turn off during smuggling? I'm probably missing something obvious so I apologise in advance!
