Wanted by the Federation

Hi Folks

I was doing some bounty hunting in a Federation sector and I've become wanted by the Federation. I was flying around finding USS and killing any wanted craft thinking that this was a good thing for the Federation, evidently I was wrong! (Yup, I'm a bit of a newb to Elite Dangerous).

What's the best way to improve my standing with the Federation once again? Ideally I'd like to do bounty hunting which gives me positive rep with the Federation, if possible.

If you are just wanted, just pay off your bounty in a station (don't get scanned though). If you're hostile​... You did something terribly wrong.

What's your bounty? If it's just 200 you probably accidently hit a non-wanted ship. Fly to a federal station and pay it off - they don't seem to hold it against you. It's thousands you must have killed someone you shouldn't - not sure how forgiving they are in that case...

Your unfriendliness could be down to a combination of the bounty and the choice of faction you are killing. Wanted or not your rep with a faction can be affected if you take down members of that faction with a Wanted tag. However, the bonus you get overall for downing pirates and handing in the associated bounties usually outweighs the losses for the few wanted Fed ships you might be taking out. When you hand those bounties in you should get a considerable bump in Fed and local Faction rep too. You might find that negative rep shifts up a bit after paying off your own bounty and handing in some more bounties. It's really a case of looking at the local political groups and deciding who you can afford to annoy a little bit and who you can afford to annoy a lot :)

If in doubt, read the detailed descriptions of each group, and prioritise hunting the group that says 'members of this group disdain laws outside their own.', or words to that effect.

I have paid off my bounties and my standing with the Federation is Unfriendly(reptuation) and Recruit(rank)

I've never killed a Federation vessel. I have killed wanted vessels accompanied by Federation ships.

How do I improve my standing with the Federation. Quite frankly this system confuses me. I thought I was doing the right thing by going to USS and killing wanted ships but clearly this was not correct.

Even the wanted vessels, that belong to a federation faction, will lower your standing with them "slightly". Just make sure to turn in your bounties to a federation faction base to raise your standing back with them. Or run missions, or trade between two Fed bases for a while, or go explore and sell the data to the feds.
