Newcomer / Intro wanted: neutron jet cone boost howto that is not a 120 minuted badly narrated video

Hi,

I tried using jet cone boosts for long jumps, didn't get it to work. Is there a written explanation somewhere? I'd rather not spend 90 minutes watching a video tutorial about something that i could READ in 5 minutes...

Cheers

Start here.

Movie?
You only need a Fuel Scoop (as i said) and this picture (from ED wiki)

...so how / when do I set the target star for the jump? The flying into the cone and recharging is no problem, but no matter when I plot my route, it's just normal jumps...

Yeah that Magsec image is probably the most succinct and straightforward explanation you can find. The only things to add are, from my own personal experience (after neutron scooping countless hundreds of times), that I find a good speed to maintain is around 10Mm/s. If you keep your throttle at 75% at this speed it seems like a nice sweetspot where you scoop at a decent rate and maintain decent control.

Oh and never bother scooping white dwarfs. White dwarfs are death and should be avoided at all costs. Only scoop neutrons.

Have you set your galmap to "Use Jetcone Boost"? You need to make sure that is ticked in the second panel of the galmap, then plot your route as normal. It will take into account any neutrons it finds along the way. Before you've scooped the neutron you should already see that your next waypoint is far beyond your current limit, as the route planner is expecting you to now perform a neutron scoop. After you've done so, you'll notice the expected fuel usage for the jump (the white section of the fuel bar) will shorten drastically and you can now make the jump.

Oh and you can also charge your FSD for the jump even before you clear the cone. It doesn't cause excess heat build up like it does with regular fuel scooping. Little tip for faster travel.

In the galaxy map where you select economic or fast route plotting there's also a checkbox for supercharging. If you tick that then the route plot will take neutrons and white dwarfs into account (so when you jump into one of those systems you'll need to supercharge to make the next jump). Alternatively, if you do it manually then, having supercharged, your range for the next jump will be increased and you should then be able to manually target a system to jump to within that extended range.

Edit: gah! and now ninja'd by Hawk ... I'm getting slow in my old age, I'll get my coat.

Step 1: Have a fuel scoop
Step 2: Follow the trajectory from the drawing below. Don't go too close to the star, it's dangerous
Step 3: Wait for the message: "frameshift drive operating beyond safety limits"
Step 4: Wait a little more until you hear "frameshift drive supercharged"
Step 5: Leave the cone and procede to your jump as usual.

Obs1: There is no visual special effect for a boosted jump. Your ship will just jump a longer distance.
Obs2: If you weren't able to get the message from Step 5, try again. You need a few seconds inside the cone to supercharge your fsd
