Wanted

Wanted by whom? For how much? Will my actions irk the local fuzz? This would be nice to know before I pew pew. I would assume that if a guy showed as wanted in a Federal system, that the Feds wanted him and thus he is open game. If he is wanted, why the hell are the cops firing on me when I have 0 bounty and am friendly with them?

Also, if he is wanted for an infraction like opening fire once on a clean target (friendly fire, etc), why is he going to be blown to pieces by the cops? Why not simply fine him when he docks? If he fires on the same target again or for more than __ seconds, then up the bounty and take him out. I'm not gonna unload my ammo on a guy for a 200 cred bounty.

Some work really needs to be done in this area considering it is a central part of the game.

Right screen's Status page shows you the 3 empires and local system governments and your rep with them, if you're wanted, it'll say who you're wanted by there. Empires like the Federation, Alliance and Empire can all have your wanted status removed by paying the fine in one of their systems before the end of the timeout. After that you're going to find it a bit harder to get into port.

Also, if you see WANTED over the signature strength indicator / fuel gauge it means you are wanted by the dominant authority in the system you are in, and therefor the 'system authority' ships in that system.

Also also, if you see WANTED over the name of the station you have clicked on in the system map, it means that you are wanted by the owner of that station, and if it is larger than an outpost and you get scanned by security during approach the station will blast you.

Not sure I worded it correctly. I meant my TARGET being wanted, not me. I know how to find that. I have no way of knowing if my target is wanted by the local cops, as it seems that half the time I shoot down someone who is wanted, the cops then fire on me even though I am not.

If he isn't wanted you won't get a bounty, although if he is wanted but you haven't scanned him yet but still open fire before completing the scan you will get a bounty on your head.

Ah,. If you haven't used a Kill Warrant Scanner on them, if it says Wanted it means by the local security forces.

Note, however, that if the target is a member of the same faction as the dominant faction in the system (and you can see that on the Contacts tab of the left UI panel) that attacking them can sometimes irritate the local security forces in realspace with you; however, if you do not shoot back at them, and then go into supercruise and then out again, they'll like you again.

That last part doesn't always happen; it's almost certainly a bug with 'wanted' not takign precedence over the allegiance, and I'm sure it'll get sorted soon after Frontier get back from holiday.

Was wondering if that was a bug, it seemed odd. I do always wait for the "wanted" to show up along with running a scanner as it gets a bit more bounties in other systems.

To clarify my statement; I think that faction mates helping their wanted buddy against you is fine, but I also think that the Security Service ships should not be included in that 'helping a buddy' thing when their buddy is wanted.

I don't mind Joe the Accountant shooting me because I shot at Bob the Crooked Accountant because they're both in Crimson Legal Accounting, but I certainly -do- mind when the cops shoot at me when the guy is wanted <g>

Oh, and as an aside, if you wait long enough, sometimes the Security Service ships will scan their buddy like they do you when yo uget close, and note him as wanted. Then they start shooting at him. Once that happens, he's fair game and even the loyalty issues don't stop you from killing him with impunity.

Yes, the inscrutable standings and arbitrary aggro baffles me too.

What sucks even more than this though is when you have a swarm of them turn on you and start shooting, but you can't fire back at them. Kind of lame really...

Only thing you can do to avoid it for the most part is to find a system with your preferred faction present as only one out of the 4/5 in a system. That way you only need to remember not to shoot Fed/Alliance/Empire guys. Makes it easier than rifling around in Contacts trying to work out who is safe to kill and who is safe to watch get killed.
