War Wagon to Station Wagon

Tell me if I have the premise right or wrong please... To have an engineer mod your ship there must be cargo space in the ship one wishes to modify... it's not as if one can deliver elements for the mod with one ship and go back later with another that is to be modified... right? Engineers won't store what you need until you arrive with another ship... There doesn't seem to be a work around for turning my FDL into a station wagon... or quite possibly more aptly described as... pick-up truck. Probably a noob question but I'm just getting into 2.1 and don't understand all the ins and outs!

Thanks...

Yes, the highest ranked up-grades require items that are considered Cargo, and you need a hold to carry it. No, you can't pre-charge an up-grade, leave, and come back later with a different ship. But, you can load a mod/weapon on a compatible ship Modify it, and then swap it to the ship you wanted it for. Through the Outfitting UI.

Agreed, this is a bit of limiting mechanic especially for ships with 4 module slots. Maybe once module storage is in, it won't be such a big deal?

To upgrade my FDL I just swapped out a small slot to a 4 ton cargo bay BEFORE getting the commodity that takes cargo space for its upgrade.

That's going to be the method. A short term sacrifice, for the big modification payoff. One or two up-grades at a time. Make us work for it all right. I am going to go un-modded for a while. I don't want to obsess over it, I easily can. And I want to get to Elite in combat, and be the master of the new AI, before I start. 3% to Elite, and some more testing on my mastery to go.

Thanks... pretty much what I thought. At this point I have weapons class discrepancies between my 2 ships but I'll keep that strategy in mind.

Thanks... I'm having an interesting time trying to find what I need (in space)... I just added an SRV bay... In addition to the 4 ton cargo bay. I now have a fairly dangerous pick-up truck!

It is definitely a process oriented situation...I'm a casual+ player and there is plenty to do in game so I don't feel too anxious about mods for my FDL... I also like to explore and trade... just want to be clear on how it all works! I have obviously been un-modded up to this point and with some adjustments to hardware and tactics I've been doing ok in 2.1

I saw the abbreviated process in Beta, but only after the "fish" period. I grok the mod UI, but I never experienced the full process. That you like to multi-role will certainly help you. Data, bounty vouchers, and mined resources are used as the vehicles to gain standing with the Engineers. All your stuffs will be theirs.
