Cruising around I ran across the Frendian System and there's a war going on there between several independent factions. I went into both the high and low intensity conflict zones and noticed all the ships are labeled as System Defense Force. Is there any way to differentiate the different factions fighting there?

nope its a one sided affair in some cases, its something to do with the buggy background sim. ETA on fix unknown
