War zones: two questions....

Hi Space Friends!
If I enter into a war zone, I have to take side with Empire, Federation and so on? Now I'm neutral with all.
I'm not a "real fighter", I have a Cobra with reinforced alloys, two gimballed beam laser, 1 point defense, 1 chaff, 1 pulse turret, cell shied bank..... would be suicide for me???
I make kill pirates missions, but I think are much more easy..........

Thanks! :)

generally after you choose a faction u can pick and choose your hostile targets from a wide range of different ships in a warzone.. I don't think any have ever initiated combat with me unless I start it first with them.

Get to the edge of the combat area before choosing a side. Then tag one and kite him away from the rest of the fight.
BTW all your weapons are beams, they take shields down fast but do very little hull damage.

It does not much matter which side you fight for, just pick one of them and start shooting the red ones. Selection is at the last page of right side hud panel.

You can be killed fast on the zone if you do not pay attention, in example getting surrounded by several enemies will be bad. Keep an eye for the radar at all times.

You do not get much money from kills, so weapons with expensive ammo are no good there.

Not a suicide if you keep your situational awareness, but be prepared to boost out fast if your shield drops, pair of pythons and an anaconda might finish you fast if you are the only one around for them to shoot. And some AI Asps have nasty tentency to boost straight at your face, that's the only way I've been killed at there so far.

Watch out for other players too, some of us might priorize live target over AI. It is lot of fun, but only real gain is kills for combat rank.

So... tell me! What do you recommend me to mount in place of one beam laser???

What about rail gun?

Gimballed beams and gimballed muticannons. The problem with the Cobra is the weapons below the ship are often "blinded", so you have to pitch up for them to see the target.

Ah, the Cobra and its hardpoints...

The disadvantage of beams is that they do little hull damage (and generate lots of heat).

The disadvantage of any canons is that they need ammo, and need you to lead the target (which makes them bad at distances).

The disadvantage of gimballed weapons is that they do less damage, and don't work well at distances or against players who know what they're doing (and break your target lock).

I'm still experimenting, but a fixed C2 laser (primary), and a fixed C2 multicannon plus two gimballed C1 multicannons (secondary) works rather well for me. (It gets a bit tricky making sense out of the reticule, but... well.)

I know that's a rather low-powered setup (no missiles, no canons, no railgun), but it works for me, at least against the kind of crafts I am not running away from in the first place (being not a full-time fighter in the first place).
