Warn you if you are under attack when in a map view!

After killing some pirates and getting a bounty on my own head in the process, I thought all was quiet and looked to galaxy map to work out where I needed to go to get my rewards, and when I went back to ship view, I had 3% hull and within seconds was destroyed.

No audio or visual clues, just a sitting duck.

This needs to be more realistic, not just let you die while looking at a map.

Open map in warzone.
Get destroyed.

LOL

Maybe you should have jumped into supercruise to leave the area before opening your map?

Never assume you're safe!

It wasn't a war zone, it was by nav beacon. But regardless, the suggestion to this forum and Frontier is to include cockpit sounds while in the system and Galaxy map screens. From a realism point of view, it is unrealistic to mute sounds just when a pilot looks at a map. It'd be worrying if present day fighter pilots had all noises in their cockpit muted when they got out their flight plans!

but I bet you won't open your map sitting in a nav beacon where you're prone, indeed likely, to get attacked, will you. ;)

Present day pilots keep their head on a swivel when they're in the air, at all times. They certainly don't make their flight plans in the heat of battle or while flying over a zone where they were just fighting or where they know they'll get attacked. :D

I think you're missing the point, all enemies were down. Only neutrals left, then while I was in map, someone arrived at nav point and decided to pick up the bounty on me. So there was no threat when I looked at the map, and during that time it seems reasonable to enable cockpit noises/alarms whilst looking at a map.... This is this a suggestion forum isn't it?

Yes opening a map can get you killed. Does the ships 'under attack' message not sound when the map is open? If it doesn't I really think it should

I do it all the time, guess I've been lucky.

I didn't realize looking at the galaxy map involved putting in ear plugs. :p

All Nav beacons are warzones. Very dangerous thing to do. Get into SC then plot your route. If you get interdicted then your map will be closed and you will be straight on the controls again.

I also seem to remember that if you have other UI panels open that they auto close on attack or interdiction.
This should happen with the map

Audio alerts playing regardless of whether you're in cockpit view or map view would be nice. I thought that was already the case to be honest :S

Doubt it would have mattered, he had 3% hull. To be honest, even if he had been looking at his cockpit and not the map, he would have been dead quickly if attacked. If you have 3% hull you are going to get destroyed by almost anything, its a very dangerous situation to let yourself to get into and certainly shouldn't be gazing at maps when it it. Priority should be to get the hell out of dodge and dock as quick as possible.

Aye! and a +1 to the OP .. an alert would be good. Likewise, when expansions for leaving the cockpit seat come down the line, it would also be good to get an alert, should you be exploring the ship / cargo bay, so you can get back to your seat and try to save the situation!

Regardless of what the OPs exact situation was, and if they should have been looking at the map or not, the point is perfectly valid.

All other UIs except maps open inside the cockpit, including the station menus. Map should too, and should not mute the sounds. My preferred solution would be for map to open right in front of you like the station menus do -- so you can still use the side panels with it open.

+1

Ok, to improve this suggestion, I would like to see all alert events such as under attack, interdiction, incoming communication or collision to audibly (and preferably also visually) alert you when in any UI.

To be clear, I was full shields and around 80% hull after I finished off the pirates. I went to Galaxy map to find where best to claim my multiple bounties, then a system map to check factions, and it was when I returned to cockpit view I was at 3% hull no shields under attack. I took evasive manoeuvres but it was too late.

Thanks for the clarification. In that case, ouch.

Yeah, it's not like opening the map places your character into a hermetically sealed pod inside the ship, devoid of sound and light (it seems hyperbole filled arguments are the only way to get your point across around here).

There should be *some* warning you're being attacked when in the galaxy/system map view.
