Single user computer, fine, but as your family grows, so do your needs for protection against them.
Unless you run linux. separate /home partition and no SU access to anyone other than me means the system is pretty safe.
At most a dumb kid figures out howto install a naughty program, and screws up their /home, everyone else still ok.
I'm safe from that, fortunately.
And to be honest, a crafty kid (or a determined adult) will get their PC infected DESPITE the best AVs. The only function they have is treatment, not protection.
Naturally I'm deliberately too "black and white", here, but mostly it's how I see AV programs.
For a responsible user they are useless. A performance baggage (and as OP showed, an occasional nuisance)
And for irresponsible user they are useless as well. Honestly, it's better to just have a USB stick with Kaspersky malware removal at hand and pass it around the family from time to time, than trying to "keep them protected"
"Oh, so you killed you laptop? Well, I'll repair it when I have time. In the meantime try to remember what to NOT do again, next time you're on the internet. and btw. when I've repaired your laptop I will see the last site you visited"
