Hardware & Technical WARNING! Elite.zip in store contains Trojan

AVG and many other AV progs do kick up a lot of "false positives" norton is one of the worse .Its always nice to be safe .I pay more attention depending on where i am downloading from ,ED store is safe as far as i have ever known :)

AVG will do your PC more harm than a virus. Try ESET antivirus for something with a smaller footprint that gives accurate results.

yeah ditched it a few years ago as was a real hog and not very accurate
re Norton ,I had it for a few years then did not renew ,Norton then blocked access to the internet as it would be unsafe as I had no AV ,it didnt tell me it had done it .It took 3 days of a great support guy talking me through editing my registry to sort it out !

I had a bunch of problems with both AVG free, and paid versions. So decided to get rid of it, which turned out to be as problematic as getting rid of a virus. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I'm using Panda now, and so far it's been pretty decent.

I should add that I'm not the most tech savvy. Anyone got any experience with Panda? Rate it or not, and if not recommend a better one?

To be perfectly honest you don't even really need AV anymore, depending on your activity and competency with operating PC's. Criminals are not interested in one persons details or bank acc's they prefer a whole databases worth ^^. Most you'll likely encounter are PUP's. Win 8.1 - 10 the in built AV is sufficient.

As this thread is discussing virus and malware scanners and false positives, moved to technical forum. Thanks!

How about windows defender + brain.exe? I have not heard of a good anti virus software in the last 20 years, so I am pretty sure they don't exist/can't compete with brain.exe.

Yep, brain.exe is prone to failure. Had, a buddy do a complete reinstall of his system recently due to his machine dying. He was continuing to reload the stuff he'd previously installed when he accidentally clicked on a bad link. That was all it took for him to have to reinstall from scratch again.

I found this as well.

But just as well trigg88 brought the subject up. Others may be getting similar results. In any case, he has now learnt what others had to learn before.
